I admit, when I was a little younger, I liked to watch the circuit, but as I've grown older it seems like there are so many better things to do than watch cars go around a loop. What is your opinion on NASCAR Racing?

I used to be a fan... a Jeff Gordon fan actually... 😛

I dunno... their ridiculous scoring system just turned me off i guess... i still watch some races... like bristol and martinsville... and especially watkins glen and sears point. but i'm more into F1, WRC and the once a year LeMans...

Wow, YANBT (Yet Another Nascar Bashing Thread). I guess there wasn't one since the season ended, so someone was bound to start one up. For the record, I love NASCAR. I also happen to be a race car driver, so I can fully appreciate what it takes to drive a race car on an oval or road course.

I do believe driving a car precludes using some type of physical activity. Argue all you like, but using your hands and legs is physical activity.

Very physical. A long race will kick your ass. My of my races are 30 laps on a quarter mile oval, and that really tires you out, especially during the summer when it's 100+ degrees. 50-60 lap races in that heat are tough too.

The races the Winston....uh..Nextel Cup guys do are really long, and take being in awesome condition to keep going that long. Worst thing is, when you get tired, you start to lose concentration, which is the worst thing that can happen in race car.

so are you saying that if someone came up with some sorta cubicle rules then you could say people moving around in a rolly chair and working at their desk is a sport....because they are barely moving their legs and arms?

yes it does take some staminia and such......but i think there should be some sort of level of physical activity that constitutes a sport.....

and yes nascar is teh suck
i think the poll answers should have been
yes
hell yes yehawww
and results

You have no idea how physcally exerting it is to drive a race car for that long, in the the kind of heat generated inside a race car.

I can tell you didn't read the whole definition, but I'll bold it for you so that you will have a second chance. Also, a race is a very physical thing. Your body is thrown around in that car and pushing in a race clutch is not like the crap you have in a 94 Honda. Shifting, braking, andthe temperature take a very big toll on a driver.

im not going to try and change what some people think about nascar... they maybe driving in circles 500 times... and it's not as easy as you think. but whatever...

Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports ... all others are games.

it was a simple example to give a point on the physical exertion aspect of it.........would you like me to make another assumtion in my prior claim just so its absolutely perfect for you?

i don't think anything that requires the use of complex mechanical devices should be considered a sport........because its not pitting solely your physical exertion plus skill against another man/woman .......your using mostly skill plus some physical exertion (not passing out)....and depending on a mechanical device to not break down.....or hope that your team has enough sponsors so they can make a good car......

its pitting skill + some physical activity (no where near as much as soccer and other sports IMO) + how much money your team has for building the machine + which manufacturer built your engine + how good your mechanics are + a pit crew

i dunno how many people here that think nascar is a sport would define it as a team sport.......b/c if it were a sport it would definitely be a team one......

i know i won't win this but whatever its my opinion

edit: being hot does does not equal physical extertion......

Finally someone who knows what it's like to go around a track. I remember the first time I got into Karts years ago my first time around the track for 20 minutes... wow my whole upper body really felt it. After the first few times though your body really toughens up to it but thats like any sport you condition your body, it's still exhausting on it, but kids who think they just hop in and it's like them driving around town taking mountain roads fast don't even have a clue.

Yea, karts beat you up too. I raced karts on road courses for about 6 years. I now race NASCAR modifieds Here's me. Karts work you out in a different way than a race car like mine does, but both kick your ass. The heat can be brutal though, especially in the summer. It's like 102 out, I'm in the cockpit covered in 4 layers of nomex, full gloves, nomex socks, shoes, nomex head sock, and helmet. It's HOT! 😀

I don't care for it. I just keep my television tuned off SPEEDVISION and onto the other channels. I can catch the sixteen-car-pileups later on TSN.

They've been racing road courses for a long time, and they do just fine.

NASCAR, or NECKCAR if you prefer, is the most useless thing on tv. Not even reality tv can compare in terms of sheer stupidity. The fact that it's continuing to gain in popularity really scares me.
