This is very interesting!! It would appear as if the Republican strategy is back firing and that Americans are not blaming Obama for what Congress is failing to get done........

WASHINGTON – Americans have come to detest Congress ever more deeply as it nears the end of a nasty fight over health care. But more than half still back President Barack Obama, a bright spot for a Democratic Party counting on its leader to help stave off expected losses in elections this fall.

The latest Associated Press-GfK poll found that fewer people approve of Congress than at any point in Obama's presidency. Support has dropped significantly since January to a dismal 22 percent as the health care debate has roiled Capitol Hill. Neither Republicans nor Democrats are safe;]b] half of all people say they want to fire their congressman.[/b]

Conversely, Obama's job-performance standing is holding fairly steady at 53 percent. And over the past two months, the Democrat has gained ground on national security issues, specifically the subsiding Iraq war and the escalating Afghanistan war, as he has spent most of his time — at least publicly — on domestic matters like the economy and health care. On those issues, he still has the support of about half the people.

"I agree with what Obama is trying to do, but nobody is listening to him," said Grace Pope of Waterville, Maine. But this 75-year-old Democrat added, "I don't think that the Congress is doing anything."

Most of the polling I have seen says that people like him personally, it is his policies they don't support. Since congress has been front and center in attempting to enact those policies and are the body that has the power of the purse they are rightly bearing the brunt of peoples anger.

The OP's poll results are obvious really. Obama makes a bunch of big speeches about how his healthcare bill (which doesn't exist) will reduce the cost of healthcare for everyone while simultaneously reducing the deficit, which sounds nice but is complete fantasy. When congress tries to pass an actual bill, everyone realizes how ludicrous it is and places their blame with the ones making the bill itself.

People *always* detest congress and want to "throw all the bums out!"... but when it comes to their individual senator or congressmen, it's a different story. Polling on the popularity of congress means nothing. Come November, the people will punish the dumbocrats.

The Republicans tried this under Clinton too, but the obstructionism then was for them to shut down the government. Clinton called their bluff and things shut down. They lost.

Alarming so many still support him. Or not alarming, but it should be.

Really, it's as if the US hasn't even had a president for the last year.

congressional approval numbers are kinda meaningless.

no one votes for congress, they vote for their individual senators/congressmen.

Actually right now the anti-incumbent attitude is the ruler. Even heard on the news yesterday that it's breaking records in polls. A quick google found this, it's dated but the point stands. And it's only growing thanks to them trying to ram healthcare down the peoples throats. The tidal wave is coming.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/02/16/incumbents.poll/index.html

According to the survey, 51 percent feel their own member of Congress should be re-elected -- also an all-time low in CNN polling -- while 44 percent say their representative doesn't deserve to be returned to office in November.

The people are upset with their failed government. That is not meaningless.

You are correct however, when it comes time to fix this problem they will continue to happily vote Republican or Democrat thus continuing the problem. They dislike Congress yet they'll continue to be pawns and vote for an incumbent party.

Obama needs to grow a set and start pushing his agenda through, not waiting to see what he'll get from Congress.

We should just get the inevitable over with and amend the constitution to declare Obama dictator for life.

Who needs a legislative branch? Who needs a judicial branch? They're just speedbumps on the road to communism ;)

You're dead on, 100% accurate. Most people loathe Congress as a whole, but repeatedly vote in their local guy or gal without a blink of an eye, and wonder why things don't change. (I am just as guilty of this as the next shmoe)

iirc, cnn a couple weeks back found that anger at incumbents is higher than at any other time in the poll's history (which isn't even 2 decades, iirc, but still)
