Poll: Moral Dilemma

Well, I ordered a portable MD recorder (MZ-N707) from EBAY (I thought I wouldn't win, so I was screwing around and . . . well, I won - and I sorely needed that money😱 - that's another story, though) - and I got it a few days ago. 😀

But that's not the problem.

Along with the order, another package arrived for me from the same person - something I didn't order. It was a 128-mb memory stick form sony, (y'know for cameras and mp3 players) and well, I sitll have it.

What shoudl I do? Should I hold onto it, or contact the store that auctioned it and tell them of their little shipping snafu? It was their mistake, and my ratings are already filled out, so they can't do anything, it seems, but my conscience tells me I shoudl return it (another problem - I don't have the money to return it - not until my check comes in - but I don't like the idea of paying [it's not the amount - it's the principle] for their mistake as well)

WHat do you guys think?

Considering that I am practically in desperate need of a Sony memory stick, I would come up with a reason to make myself keep it. 😀

it's a company. and can they bill me for the item? to be honest, I'm not so worried about the company as who this is supposed to go to (if it's sent out, I'm asusming, someone else was supposed ot get it.).

and yes, I'm absolutely sure that I'm not supposed to get this item.

If you're worried about it just e-mail them about their error and see if they want you to send it back. At least then it won't be nagging on your conscience.

If it's a large company, they might not even bother to have you send it back. Either way, you will probably feel better (since you seem to feel that keeping it would be a bit dishonest).

My conscience wouldn't let me keep it.

Call them up, explain what happened over the phone. Maybe they will say ooops, our mistake - keep it.

If they want it back, request a prepaid shipping label to be sent to you.

Don't listen to the devil on your shoulder! 😉

But the devil on my shoulder is so . . . very . . . enticing . . ..😱
Oh well - yeah, I'm very inclined towards letting them know what happened.

He's got the right idea.

Same thing happened to me once. However, the company made two mistakes. I bought a complete system, but didn't order a hard drive with it. They shipped me a drive anyway, and I sent it back. A few weeks later when I brought the system up I found out that they sent me 128 MB of EDO SIMMs (maybe DIMMs) instead of 32 MB. I figured two mistakes was pretty bad on their part, so I kept the memory.

For what it is worth, I could contact the company and let them know about their mistake. Don't foot the bill for shipping though.

That is also what your conscience seems to be saying, so follow it 🙂

Damn conscience!😉

I sent them an e-mail explaining the situation - I also looked up the ebay site and found the winner's email, but was wondering on whether to tell him what happened as well or not . . ..

I would let the company deal w/ the winner and explaining to them how they messed up. That is not your problem. You did the right thing by letting the company know. Most companies will either say keep it sorry for the inconvience or send you a post paid return envelope or something.

Good luck.

According to postal laws, if it is sent to you and you didn't order it, it is a gift. I've had this happen before. Had a UPS RMA'd, and they sent me two more. I had a hard drive RMA's (refunded), and they sent me a replacement. I informed both companies of their mistakes, they wanted me to ship it back at my cost, they threatened to charge my CC, and I said do it, but you'll never see a dime. They dropped it then and there.
If you don't have to spend any $$ to send it back, I would send it back. If they try to charge you for it, then you should dispute it and tell them to go to hell and keep the items.

Moral of the story, if it isn't your fault, it shouldn't cost you any money. ESPECIALLY WHEN SOME AS$HOLE DRIVER HITS YOU AND YOU ARE LIABLE 15% FOR "BEING" THERE!!!

got the replies . . . their replies are terse and pushy . . . almost makes me regret emailing them in the first place . . . bastards.:|

What did they say? If they are being a-holes about it and do something stupid like demand that you pay to ship it back to them, just keep the stick.

ooh, thanks! with the replies I've been given by the company, I'm tempted to just email them the link and ignore them afterwards . . ..:|
