Do you own a license for MS software, but download the non-activation version?

Personally, I do. Just recently though. Didn't enjoy them telling me that I was stealing their software everytime I wanted to add a new feature and it asked for activation.

Installed Word XP. Activated it.
Needed Excel XP. Called, told I was stealing. Activation okay.
Mom wanted to use PowerPoint XP. Installed that, called, told that I wasn't allowed to activate anymore for 90 days. I explained the situation, note marked.
Uninstalled PowerPoint XP when I came to school this year. Activation required. I'm like, wtf. So I hopped online, and downloaded the edition w/o activation. Problem solved.

Occasionally, although I qualify for volume licensing for most of it anyways.

I wonder if this thread is about to get locked...

Why would it? Although all my other threads tend to get locked...

I hate that activation crap. I got a free copy of Windows XP from M$, but I never installed it. I would rather use a version that I know doesn't have activation.

I wish I had all the problems you have with getting free things and single activation only.

I've got several LEGAL copies of XP two of them are in use, the other one (on my computer) I use the version I downloaded that doesn't require activiation. It's just a pain in the ass.

Nothing really for the casual user, it's a fairly painless process right up until they force you to call them...

...for those who change hardware regularily it's an annoying extra step that you have to continusly spend time on, it also doesnt "do anything" for the user spending their time calling Microsoft.

Both Office XP and Windows XP should have required you to activate them.

I've got a life. I don't want to spend my time dealing with this crap...

Sometimes I think that now that they've got some stable os's out there (win2k and xp) they feel the need to replace the BSOD interruptions with something. :|

I actually have a copy of XP Pro that I'm not using. Wiped it out and put 2k back on. Just too much hassle for no discernable benefit.

Activation doesnt include your name and/or address.

never done that.

all ive ever put in is teh actual code the one that looks like "*****-*****-*****-*****-*****" then i fill in all that time Zone crap and it installes teh OS or Program. thats all ive ever done for 2k or XP. ive never actually seen this other thing you are talking about.

anyone have a screen shot of it?

I own XP pro for legal reasons but just use the corporate version as not to be hasseled.
