No no, it is legal. It cost 100 yuan, which is quite a lot for many Chinese.

well anyhow, to get back on topic, I really don't think maxtors are that poor quality, but I also dont think that they are on the same level as ibm's.

It's funny though, I have a 13.6gb maxtor that has given me quite a few problems (namely it will spontaneously format itself; I have never seen anything quite like it), and it was actually made by ibm. I don't think all maxtors are made by ibm, but mine was :p

I am positive. I can scan in the top of the drive for you if you would like.

Jaydeeus: Do it, I really want to see what it looks like. So are these available as RMA replacement only?

I'd be a great thing to tease OdiN with.

here it is

I edited out the serial number and such, but you can clearly see the ibm warranty, ibm part number, etc.
Tease away.

Oh, and I am not sure about the rma replacement and whatnot. It should be replaceable through maxtor, seeing as how it is a retail drive.

But where does it say it's made by IBM?? I think its just one of those OEM versions where IBM puts Maxtor hdds into their machines(but I doubt it).

Yes Andy, but you can clearly see that the Expert line looks identical to the IBM Deskstar 34GXP. This Maxtor uses traditional Maxtor case, which is abnormal if it was made by IBM.

IBM has some of the best manufacturing plants in the world. Their manufacturing is seperate from the rest of the company. Their manufacturing will sign NDAs not to disclose information to other parts of the company. A lot of competitors to IBM use IBM manufacturing. I doubt IBM as a whole cares, because even if their competitors use their manufacturing they are still making money off of their competitors products.

<Edit>I have no idea if IBM manufacturers Maxtor drives, or just a few of their drives or any such info. It just would not surprise me if IBM did manufacture some Maxtor drives.</Edit>

This is what I think is happening. IBM HDs are generally more expensive and yes more reliable as well as faster than any of the other major HD manufactures. I would be willing to bet that the HD shown in the picture was taken from an IBM PC. IBM has a seperate PC division that is not related to the HD division. It is a matter of economics for the PC division who can get Maxtor, Quantum or WD HDs for a lot cheaper than they can the IBMs. I have maintained several IBM PCs over the past 6 years, and not once have I found an IBM HD in any of them. Instead I found primarily WD and Maxtor to be inside. Maxtor probably prints the labels per request from the IBM PC division.

Having never taken apart an IBM server I wonder if the server division uses IBM HDs? ANy body out there know?
