POLL: Make Election Day a Federal Holiday?

Should we make the first Tuesday in November a Federal Holiday to allow people to vote more easily without having to worry about taking time off of work?

Or, at the least, make voting a week-long process?

I say yes but still make it a one-day thing, people might wait on early returns or exit polls to decide whether to vote the next day..or something.

So yes, national holiday, 1 day.

Why does it need to be a holiday? It doesn't take that long to vote. Who needs a whole day off to vote? What needs to be done is making the polling places more efficient so that the lines move faster. We also need some federal standard on what the ballots look like and how they are counted. Personally I like the scantron type system Oklahoma uses statewide. You fill in an arrow next to who you want to vote of or the yes/no if it is a state question....badda bing...badda boom....you are done. Not even a total moron can screw that method up.

For a sample of what I'm talking about see here

I like the Scantron type, too. That's what's been used here in Louisville for years. It affords an easy recount and is easy to fill out.

As for the holiday, it would remove those rush times in the mornings, lunch, and afternoons when the 9-5ers are pretty much forced to vote and opens it up to an all-day event. If we can have a Federal Holiday to honor our fallen veterans, why not a holiday for that which they've fought and died to protect?

Like assemblage said, just because it's a federal holiday doesn't mean everyone would get off. The only people that would for sure are the federal employees.

Honestly the wait times are no big deal. I have never worked anywhere that cared if you were late or left early so you could go vote. In fact in our last pay packet before the election we had a letter from our CEO reminding us how important it was to vote and that if we needed to come in late or leave early that was ok.

Would be popular with Democrats since gov employees are the only ones guaranteed to be off on federal holidays.
Most people are off on July 4, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas, etc.

I like the week idea. Make it like Quanza. This way more people might vote and give time to tally the votes. Week to vote and you won't know till next week friday!

From the Oklahoma ballot:

This measure adds a new section of law to the Constitution. It adds Section 35 to Article 2. It defines marriage to be between one man and one woman. It prohibits
giving the benefits of marriage to people who are not married. It provides that same sex marriages in other states are not valid in this state. It makes issuing a marriage
license in violation of this section a misdemeanor.

I'm pretty sure that the U.S. Constitution prohibits what's in bold.
