POLL: MAC machine or ATM?

I suppose this is a regional thing. I still call it "The MAC Machine".

People here tend to say "I need to hit MAC".

maybe they're talking about their crappy computer? 😱

If you look on the back of your ATM/debit card you'll see a bunch of icons. My Citizens bankcard has: MAC, Pulse, Maestro, NYCE, Cirrus and STAR.

MAC was one of the original cash networks. There was a time when you could only use your ATM card on certain networks. Those days are gone which is why specific network vernacular like "MAC" are fading.

Around here they were always MAC machines. I remember overhearing someone say ATM once and was wondering what the heck they were talking about. I still refer to them as a MAC machine but can interact with those that call them ATMs.

My g/f says MAC. Makes sense, I guess, all the machines there are labelled MAC.

To me, though:

MAC = medium access controller
ATM = what you get cash from

Viper GTS

I voted "Other" because we refer to it around campus as the "Stupid F***ing Piece Of S*** That's Either Out Of Money Or Broken Down And When It Isn't It Only Dispenses Twenties"

- M4H

ATM machine = automated teller machine machine. For some reason, I always say "atm machine" even though I know it sounds stupid without the acronym.

In milwaukee they call them Tyme Machines. "I have to go hit the Tyme Machine"
First time I heard it I was like "is that supposed to be some kind of stupid joke about time = money?"

Don't even get me started on sofa drink vs pop vs soda!
We're proudly soda here, although if you drive 200 miles west the pop people have taken over.

Ok WTF would I drink Soda(am I fvcking baking or cleaning anything?) or drink pop(a weasel?) WTF is pop?

I drink coke.

I drink coke.

Is that Coca Cola? Pepsi? Dr. Pepper? 😉
I don't do the whole pop, soda, soda pop, coke thing. I call it by it's name. If I want a Pepsi I say Pepsi I don't say Coke.

Oh and it's ATM. I've never heard of MAC until now. Macs = the other PC. Or a burger from McDonalds. 😛

Well I do call them by actual name too... but I prefer coke as an all encompassing term.

Long long ago there was something known as a "Money Access Card"

This was before Visa/ATM cards.

A MAC card was used only at special machines that dispensed cash. Later this became a network of participating banks, and this machines were marked MAC.

Eventually the various networks joined to what we have today and the term ATM superceded the older terminology. Like many words, it is still used regionally
