POLL::Lion King or Beauty and the Beast?

Lion King is just so... touristy.

I mean, if you're going to go to NYC to see a play, why bother seeing a play produced by Disney and based on a cartoon movie? maybe "awful" is too harsh, but it just seems like such a waste of an experience. like eating at the Friday's in Times Square when you could go downtown and eat at a real restaurant.

Beauty and the Beast is just unremarkable. I saw it and enjoyed it, but 3 years later, I can't remember a thing about it. If I had paid for it, I'd have been disappointed.

remember, its our anniversary...I'm looking for something both her and I will love...plus something that's entertaining and maybe slightly romantic at the same time. (cheese)

edit: im crossing rent off the list cuz i heard its too serious and too dramatic. we both like to laugh so we want something on the lighthearted side + romantic (jezz...why does that R word keep on popping up over and over again!!)

My personal favorite was Phantom. Tommy was really good too but thats no longer playing. I heard Mama Mia is quite good. Aida sucked don't bother with that.

It's dramatic but its a musical.

The set is mindblowing and the music is fantastic.

If you've never seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it.

I liked the soundtrack so much after I saw it, I went out and paid full price to get it.

hmmm. mamma mia might be a good candidate. my gf loves 70's music

loki, can you give me a brief description of what Wicked was like? Seems like its the second highest grossing on Broadway (1.13 mil as opposed to 1.14 mil for Lion King)

In a nutshell - A prequel to The Wizard Of Oz about how Glinda The Good Witch came to be mortal enemies with The Wicked Witch Of The West.

Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell, Working, Children Of Eden, The Baker's Wife, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, etc). I always say you can't go wrong with Stephen Schwartz. He's the best!

Rent is gritty, but it's still a romantic love story with a happy ending. This is theater. It's not gonna be all Adam Sandler movie all the time...

Nonetheless, Rent is showing it's age after only ~10 years and it almost seems a little corny now when I listen to it.

Oh, you could go see Little Shop Of Horrors, too. That is an amazing show

I'll second the Producers. Saw it on Broadway over the Memorial Day weekend. Great show, funny, entertaining songs (like "Springtime for Hitler"). I've seen other shows on Broadway--Rent, Phantom, etc. etc. Just for sheer laughs, Producers is a riot. Definitely worth going to see, even with the replacement cast (no more Broderick & Lane).
