Every netgear switch I owned had to be reset about once a week as it would just quit or lock the whole network up. I wasn't impressed with their firewalls or routers.

D-Link consumer equipment is junk in my opinion but the commercial stuff is pretty nice

Linksys is the opposite of what I said about D-Link. However you can tell they have problems selling some items as you are reminded 20 times in an advertisement that they are "A division of Cisco".

My friend swears by Belkin, never used them though

I never dealt with anything on a corporate scale so most of my opinions are based on small office, large home networks.

Of those, Linksys without a doubt IMO.
DLink - Crap
Netgear - Ok, but not more
Linksys - Pretty good, though I did get pissed when they changed their GigE cards from SysKonnect chips to Realtek ones just by going from rev2 to rev3.
Belkin - No AIEEE!!!

I've never had a D-Link router or switch die on me, and I've bought a lot of them. they're peripheral items, like USB wireless adapters and the like are utter crap, but for routers, switchs, hubs, and kvm's, they are reliable in my experience. they are usually $10-15 cheaper than a Linksys as well.

I like Netgear's blue metal cased stuff, though their silver plastic boxes suck.

A lot of people buy Linksys for the Cisco name, and because they can flash firmware on some of the wireless routers. i don't really care about either, and in my experience D-Links are just as reliable. Hence I buy D-Link.

Linksys.

Though if Cisco was an option I would choose that. I loved my Aironet 1200 series. Wish I never sold it :(

First, it has to be taken into consideration that many devices cross brand are the same OEM with different plastic Dress and brand custom firmware.

The underlying assumptions of Polls like the above is that while every one of the above mentioned Brand sells close to hundred different devices, one company manufactures the whole line well and the others Not.

In reality there are good model of D-Link, or Netgear, Linksys, SMC, Buffalo, Belkin, and other that even were not mentioned here.

However if related the the most popular item Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

Buffalo Tech. and Belkin offer specific decent units that have advantage on all the rest of crowd since they are WDS as is.

Linksys WRT line happen to have the 3rd party firmware ?conundrum?, which make it a flexible unit for enthusiast "Hackers.?

What WDS is? See here: Wireless Network - Configuration Modes.

My D-Link 614+ A has worked like a charm for the 2 years that I have owned it.
Never once has there been a problem with the router itself. I have never had to reset it
due to locking up. I am happy with it.

Linksys WRT for hacked firmware and a vibrant community following.

D-Link has decent support. (Linksys support sucks)

Netgear is now the worst of both worlds - products aren't very good anymore and support is horrible.

When I upgraded from dial up to dsl my first router was Siemen Speedstream 2604 router, it was VERY SOLID product I ever had and I had Linksys wireless-b router was sitting in the closet wrapped. Linksys had problems with some firmwares. so I decided to try Linksys WRT last month with stock firmware it is okay I guess.
Speedstream 2604 is not a WIRELESS router just thought u might want to know.
