Poll: Liberalize handgun ownership in Mexico?

Do you think allowing Mexicans to arm themselves would cut help cut back on the brazen behavior of cartels in Mexico?

I think this would help Mexico and the US. If we try to go back to the 1990s assault weapons ban style legislation that also limited clip capacity to 8 rounds (very stupid) we will be going backwards. I think America will remain safer if the average citizen can use deadly force (and lots of it) to protect their lives and property if need be.

edit: Apparently handgun ownership IS legal in Mexico, but the laws are contradictory and severe.

Who am I to tell Mexicans what their laws should be?

Just today, the government announced the arrest of 750 total members of Mexican cartels in the US! I say we are quite involved already. Im proposing a possible solution that might help to nip it in the bud.

WASHINGTON - Federal agents have rounded up 755 suspects in a wide-ranging crackdown on a Mexican drug cartel operating inside the United States, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday.

The sweep against the Sinaloa cartel culminated in a series of Drug Enforcement Administration raids overnight and early Wednesday that led to 52 arrests. In recent months, the DEA and other agencies have staged raids in 120 cities across the country that led to the 755 arrests.

"International drug trafficking organizations pose a sustained, serious threat to the safety and security of our communities," Holder said. "As the world grows smaller and international criminals step up their efforts to operate inside our borders, the Department of Justice will confront them head on to keep our communities safe."

Heres what made me think they might try AWB2.0 :

At a press conference announcing the arrests, Holder also suggested that re-instituting a U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons would help reduce the bloodshed in Mexico, where last year 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence.

So we are to disarm to make Mexico safer? Please.

Why not? If the law abiding people have guns, then those who would take advantage of them have that much more to contend with.

I am too ignorant of the real-world conditions in Mexico to have any intelligent opinion on this topic. I imagine most members here are in the same position.

I say why not, but I also agree with Don Vito, I've got nothing to base this opinion on. I just think if the cartels are threatening folks with guns, those folks should have them too.

Another thing I thought, since the cartels bring in so much money, can the average Mexican citizen afford a handgun + ammo?

i voted no. you yanks probably think everyone should have guns. it's just not so. y'all need to simmer down.

Not all of us. I own guns and I don't think everyone should have guns...hell, I don't think half the people who do own guns should have them.

It's not the Mexicans causing problems, it's all the Colombian cartels in Mexico causing problems.

They are but a thread in a quilt of problems. It is the Mexican cartels that are causing the havoc in Mexico.

But more importantly it is the demand for drugs that funds these thugs to begin with.

Handguns are illegal in Mexico and thats the problem in my opinion. Trukloads of cartel members roll into small towns, take them over and run them like fiefdoms. They know the citizens are unarmed and defenseless. The local police force can be taken down by threats and one or two cop murders.

And as far as affording weapons, I think those that can - should.

Apparently certain guns can be owned in Mexico....kind of...and can only be bought from the Army! See OP for more info. Title updated.

"in a way, each of us has an el guapo to face. for some, shyness might be their el guapo. for others, a lack of education might be their el guapo. for us, el guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. but as sure as my name is lucky day, the people of santa poco can conquer their own personal el guapo, who also happens to be the actual el guapo!"

We have provided them with their stupid drug policy which caused this. Why not tell them how to arm themselves as well?
