Legalize it, but of course with regulations similar to alcohol: no sales, usage or possession to/by minors, etc. Also, allow each state to regulate it or even criminalize it as they see fit.
65 years of federal criminalization have done nothing but make the problem worse, and at the same time have denied us a valuable agricultural resource.

And a safer country to boot. :)

yeah, im sure the country will be a whole lot safer when tobacco and booze are pushed underground.

remember the prohibition?

I was absent.

nik

Sounds like you were also absent during class when they taught the history of Prohibition. In 1920 they actually passed an Amendment to the Constitution to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages. (Adding an Amendment to the Constitution is no easy task.) The social upheval this caused was so bad that in 1933 the 21st Amendment was ratified, which nullifed the 18th Amendment.

But you won't let a few facts get in the way of your opinion on this, will you, Nik?

Sounds like people need to control themselves and realize that their addiction to the crap isn't worth it.

Then again, out of spite, no I won't let a few facts get in the way of my opinion now that you've raised that question. :)

To those of you arguing with ffmcobalt, i encourage you to check out his site. Just another spoiled kid that knows everything. I don't think I'll bother flaming him any more, although it was fun since he can't pull a comeback out of his asss to save his life.

Making drugs illegal doesn't work. Throwing drug users in ever-growing prisons doesn't work. The government can create whatever laws it wants to banning any substance it wants to but people will do them regardless.

Drug ABuse is a symptom of a bigger problem, not a disease in and of itself. Banning drugs is like prescribing cough drops for bronchitis... might have the appearance of some success but below the surface the bacteria are multiplying.

Of course it's more complicated than that simple analogy. But if you look at the reasons people do drugs it's usually because they can't seem to find hope or joy otherwise. Happy people who have fulfilling lives don't become dependent on drugs... they don't need to.

So perhaps the government should focus its efforts on restoring people's faith in themselves, the world, and each other. Not an easy task, to be sure... but it's the only real solution here. Give people something to hope for... something to feel collectively energized about and you will see the drug problem snuff itself out.

This thread and the ones like it are pathetic. All they do is turn into flame wars. It's sad.

Legalize it. Marijuana is safer than alcohol, so why is it illegal yet alcohol is not?

Oh? Is that why four joints per week has the same cancer-causing chemical ingredients that comprise a pack of cigarettes per day?

nik

If you do your research carefully, you would find that there are zero deaths, that's right, zero deaths in the US that are associated with marijuana usage.

That's not a good 'fact' though because alot of people *do* die from lung cancer. If it was legalized steps could be taken to reduce its harmful effects. Otherwise to hell with it all, make alcohol and tobacco illegal, wouldn't bother me a bit. If I can't smoke a doobie, you can't smoke your tobacco or drink your alcohol. People don't like that idea though. Unless you're a chump like nik who only chimes in to threadcrap.

On a side note I apologize for any negativity I have left in this thread. ;)

I haven't once threadcrapped in this thread. I've kept to the conversation and added my opinion, etc. If I can't drink my beer or smoke my cigars, that's fine. But just keep that pot sh|t illegal and i'll be happy.

If re-legalizing pot will free up jail space for violent offenders I would agree. But if re-legalized..pot usage should not be commercialized or promoted in any form or fashion. Keep it a small home grown cottage industry with no commercial encouragement.
