I don't know, but I may be the only person here that has actually worked for Olds (for 5 years, 1982-1987). I vividly remember back in '83 when Olds set a sales record (1st quarter), where they actually beat Chevy in the number of cars sold. We were all given these plastic license plates saying "Olds - USA #1". Those were the days. Olds had a strong lineup - Cutlass, 88, 98, Ciera, Custom Cruiser, Hurst, 442, Toro. GM was stupid and combined the engineering of Olds, Buick and Cadillac (BOC division) in '84. This created a homogeneous engineering environment where all the cars started to look the same. At the same time, the downsizing of the carlines really hurt Olds. I remember sitting in a marketing meeting where they said that 60% of the cars sold by Olds were to people that were buying the last car of their life, i.e. older car buyers. Well, with the downsizing and move to FWD, that killed many of these types of customers. Olds also abandoned their performance end, dropping the ball with icons such as the true muscle 442 and Hurst Olds concepts, killing that part of their past. They were essentially writing their own death sentence. Many of us were screaming about this, because it was so obvious to us. I remember a conversation with a reliability engineer back in the '84 timeframe, looking at all these late 80s concept cars and prototypes. I said something like "these future vehicles will sure make dinosaurs of our current lineup" and his response (prophetically) was "yeah, but we need a few dinosaurs left around here". How true
