I know this is probably going to start some kind of flame war but...

I'm considering buying either a JVC RXDP9VBK
or a Harman Kardon AVR520. I will be buying locally since I can get better prices on both. The links are for illustration purposes only. ;)

I know that the JVC comes with an RF remote and is THX Select Certified. All I'm looking for in a remote is that it is a learning remote so the RF versus IR doesn't really matter to me.

Would THX really make THAT much of a difference?

JVC is now an RCA company. I'll let you decide.

I'm currently thinking about an h/k HT unit right now- my Dad has owned two and swears by them.

HK is much better, even now that their products have slipped in the past 10 years or so IMO. JVC=appliance store junk.

Without reading past the first four posts: Go with JVC....even though RCA does suck IMO.....i have a JVC unit right here next to me and it's great.....the sound system in the living room(about 20 years old) kicks @$$......

i like jvc....though never had HK.....so can't say which is better, i'm going to stick with jvc till they let me down

If your a high end manufacter and already know how to build good sounding equipment do you really need to get it THX certified ?

Why give George Lucas money when you already know what your doing.

The THX certifcation is smoke and mirrors anyways when you see it on low end junk.

THX certification requires that you jump through a hoop and pay up. It doesnt necessarily mean youre getting a quality product.

Hmmm...Pioneer and RCA. That's TWO strikes against the JVC. ;)
I've never really liked most Pioneer stuff. A lot of it is really gimmicky in an AIWA kind of way. You know what I mean? Lots of lights and colored displays instead of actual features?
The ONLY Pioneer products I will even stand behind are their Laserdisc, DVD, and old M-series car CD changers. To the rest of their stuff, I have this to say -- ":p"

I knew there would be a lot of JVC hate in here but I didn't think it would be so one-sided. Would any of you think differently if I could get the JVC for less than the HK?

the only JBL I would ever buy:

S-video VCR ( I own)
Studio series speakers if I was on a budget (don't own, but have recommended to friends)

Harmon Kardon all the way.... you should be comparing to Denon and Pionner Elite

Question: JVC used to be on its own, right, and then was scooped up by Matsushita (the Panasonic, Technics, Quasar people), right?

And now it's RCA (GE/Thompson)? UGH!

When you write "Technics" it burns my eyes. I dislike them the most of all. They are the purveyors of uber-cheese!

Several years ago I worked in the warehouse of an electronics chain. I liked to walk around in there and look at everything that was available in home and car audio. One day I saw a component Technics THX amplifier. My initial reaction was HA HA HA! I thought it was somebody's sick idea of a joke. Then, I thought maybe I was being a little close-minded. A few weeks later I caught a couple of the salespeople talking about it and they confirmed my original suspicions. :)

Well, I guess at least they make good turntables if you're into that DJing thing. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while! ;)

Me and my buddy just put together my HK system on Monday night....I was on a tight budget so I picked the AVR125 and HKT 5 speakers..

and WOW...what a clean sounding loud system...

don't even think about it again...HK all the way...there prices aren't bad at all now either..

so does that mean that JVC is a panasonic family product? hk is harmon int'l, (HK, jbl, mark levinson, etc).

really should be comparing hk with denon and marantz, maybe outlaw, though the last might not suit your needs.

JVC was (and I believe still is) in the Panasonic family of products. Personally I'd go with Onkyo or Denon, but the original question was JVC vs HK.

electronics salesman here, JVC is indeed a Matsushita product. Where did this crap RCA idea come from?
