Just checked the mail and noticed that I received a Jury Duty summons.

I can get out of it if I want to, as being a student will exempt me from my obligation to show. I'm not required to take the exemption though.

Should I duck out or go? I don't think the court session will intrude into my classes that day.

From what I remember from the threads on ATOT its a split decision, some people say its boring and want to rip their hair out, others say its mega lulz watching the issues of some people.
 
How large of a county do you live in? I.e. what do you think your chances of getting picked are?

If you got picked, it may interfere with your classes.
 
Why isn't "Do your duty as a citizen" an option?

If you disagree with the law, its jury nullification time. Think about it, you can undermine the entire legal system with your vote.

first time its happened to me. wiki lists county pop. at 300k.

my classes that day start in the evening but its like a 30min drive to the school.

court says start time 8:45am and i have to leave around 4:40pm to get to class on time.
 
You cannot get out of it for being in school...I was still forced to go.

We had to go for 2 weeks, 8am-4pm, for those 2 weeks...some interesting cases, I tried to make sure if I was selected, to get in on everything.
 
I've been called twice. I hated it both times because I never got picked. It's hot, it's crowded, and it's boring.

One of these days, I wouldnt mind being picked because I'm the kind of dork who will watch a trial. I WOULDNT want say, a case of a child being abused and murdered, or something of that nature, but I'd still do my duty as a citizen. Aside from that, I actually hope one of these days I get picked for a criminal trial.
 
To add:

My parents have actually both been picked for murder trials. It kinda bothered my mother after the sentencing. Both of them did find the whole thing pretty interesting though.
 
There are things to be learned that might make it educational. You will see that public defenders are court appointed lawyers for the poor that have a lousy track record for winning cases. You will observe convicted criminals that are testifying against the accused to better their own situation. You will see judges so bored with their own jobs that they appear to be nodding off until a court clerk gets their attention. You will see government employees that are paid to pass sheets of paper from one person to another. You will see lawyers follow procedures so mind numbing that you will wonder why you didn't get yourself disqualified by declaring that you are racist against minorities.

I know it's a one in a million shot, but what if you get sequestered?

I've gone to downtown Detroit three times in the last 15 years for jury duty, sat around all day and never got picked.
 
Jury duty is such bullshit. Many jobs wont pay you and you have to use up vaca days. I was fortunate enough to have a job that paid me in full when I did grand jury. But I always thought what if they didnt? I live check to check pretty much and even 1 day without full pay would probably mess me up. I firmly believe all jury duty should go to the unemployed. They get a few bucks from the govt, have some thing to do. Its a win-win.
 
I always go when I'm summoned (duh) and I've never been picked. I wish I would though, it would be interesting.

I got dismissed from selection on a torture murder trial once. I had a specialists doctor's appointment and was starting college, not sure which of those things got me dismissed. Maybe they just felt bad for making a barely-18 year old kid sit through torture/murder evidence.
 
I've never been fined for non-response. I'm mid 30's and have never served. I always just send it back with "not at this address". They eventually stopped sending them a few years back.
 
I've done jury duty once and I liked it. Was against these guy(s) that robbed 2 banks and took a car gun point. Was neat
 
Obviously, your classes are not difficult enough to demand your attention. It also appears that someone else is paying for your education. Otherwise, you would be better focused on what is most important to you.
