Yes, I searched and there was a (old) thread about this here, but it didn't have a poll. This thread does. 😛

Anyway, with AMD's much-hyped Opteron CPU on the market and the cheaper Athlon 64 on its way, I'm wondering how many of us are either already using them, and how many are planning to in the future.

For the record, I am the happy owner of a dual Opteron 240 rig. 😉
 
Started replacing my AthlonXP's about 3 months ago (all 4 replaced now) after I tasted the HT P4 processors and won't look back so I am waiting on the Prescott.
 
Opteron might be. Depends on (future) pricing and whether or not Newegg gets em in refurb for cheap, a la AMD 760MPX boards.

Does anyone know if the Athlon64 will be SMP capable, even if only for two-way systems?
 
don't Athlon64 is SMP......
that is why AMD want to have Opteron
what is the purpose of having Opteron if Athlon64 is SMP
 
what possible benefit can an Opteron or Athlon64 bring to the table this early in the game, not much really. Think about it what possible 64bit real world apps or games do you know are on the market at this time that would require 64bit ???

I'll tell you what benefit the Opteron gives you: AFFORDABLE SPEED. I don't care what 3dmark says, the Opteron is the fastest thing I've ever seen in it's price range. My dual 1.4 GHz rig compiles a well-equipped Linux kernel in under 2 minutes. Sure, a dual 2.8 GHz Xeon could probably do that, but those are a little on the pricey side. 🙂

as much as i like amd and have only built thier systems, i've looking at benchmarks on some pre-release sample of the athlon64 and have noticed that if amd does not get the clock speed up on those, it wont' matter how much work it can do per clock cycle, cause the p4s will still leave it in the dust.

also, why disable the second memory channel on the A64 and leave it operational on the opteron, that makes no sense, you might as well shoot yourself in the foot cause thats what its gonna do to performance when you disable that

i'm kinda iffy on buying one

i'd like to get a dually bartonmp with 400fsb when the prices drop in september
 
It depends on if/when MS comes out with WinXP 64bit for AMD, as only Linux 64bit is the only OS available for x86-64 now.
 
Prescott for sure. I'm more impressed by the IBM 64 bit chip in the Appl e computers. They can run the OS in 64-bit AND run the old 32-bit apps and software at the same time. Does anyone know if the AMD chip can do this? I heard that the Athlon 64 must run in either 32-bit mode OR 64-bit mode but not at the same time... But in the end its irrelevent for me since my P4 3.2 should hopefully last me at least a year until the Prescott chips come out.
 
I was thinking about replacing my aging dual XP system with Opterons for some time, but the lack of an AGP made me decide against it.
 
I'll probably wait for nForce3 Pro 250 boards to come out. I'm liking almost everything about it, except for the lack of PCI-X slots, but that seems to be found almost exclusively in the realm of dual-processor server boards (someone correct me if I'm wrong 🙂).

With the price of Corsair XMS memory going up like it is, I can plan to sell mine for a profit if I need to switch to R-ECC stuff. 😎 Of course, it sounds like there will be dual-channel Athlon 64's too, so I could just grab one more XMS3200C2 module and round my rig out to 2GB of RAM. 2GB is not quite commensurate with the abilities of the Hammer, but enough to do my job 😀

walk2, you had better let Cray and IBM know that AMD is "junk." They don't seem to have noticed yet, and are making supercomputers and gnarly server clusters out of them! :Q
 
lol for those who say AMD is crap, look at the heat AMD's next gen processor puts out, about half of what u get from a Prescott.

I realize they had AGP on the new nForce but single CPU wasn't stroking my salami. Didn't know they had a twinner one out with AGP now though. 😱 If I could afford it without selling my car I might consider it. 😉 Any 4-8 CPU boards out for it yet?
