From HardOCP:

"While we are still looking into this, it seems that the in-game screen shots posted on the Net yesterday showing off IQ produced by the GeForceFX 5800 Ultra are 'wrong'.. . .

"We have been working with NVIDIA on this to get an answer and it seems that now we have the preliminary information to give us a bit more insight on the question.

"The GeForceFX's technology applies filters that effect AntiAliasing and Anisotropic filtering before the frame buffer and after the frame has left the frame buffer. In short, this means that all of our screenshots do not accurately represent the true in-game visual quality that the GFFX can and will produce, as the screen shots were pulled from the frame buffer (in the "middle" of the AA process). We have come to conclusions about the GFFX IQ (Image Quality) that may be simply wrong."

So it's possible that "driver fix" for the problems with LQ mode may be a moot point. If all the image qualities are a step ahead across the board. Waiting for a followup from {H} on this.

If it turns out to be true, the ONLY remaining problem with this card will be the noise. Hopefully a future stepping or a board partner will allow for quieter cooling with the same clockspeeds. 20% faster and quiet would be well worth $400 to me personally. Damn noise ruining an otherwise perfectly good card :|

By the way, to someone who didn't believe the fact that it takes 10dB sound pressure (objective) difference to equal a perceived (subjective) doubling in loudness, here's just the first one of 166 sources from an Altavista search:

1280x960 is standard 4:3

1280x1024 is not

looks like i will be getting a radeon 9700 non-pro

sapphire evil commando or something

it supposedly has 2.8 ns chips :D
if not i will still be happy for $236 shipped

Didn't say I didn't believe it, I just said I'd never heard that before. It's apparently just a matter of human perception versus actual noise measurements. ;) Good tidbit to know, though!

That would still make the noise more than twice as loud (to the human ear, at least ;) ), and that's still not acceptable. We all seem to agree on that point.

Hm, it seems that the dustblower isn't native to the FX only. Today my friend recieved his Abit Geforce 4 TI 200, and low and behold, it has one huge dustblower on it and it takes up two slots. I thought that chip doesn't need any special cooling?
