i live near sacramento, and it is fine for me. Amy parents live kind of out in the boonies, and the reception gets lame when im indoors, but otherwise its always very good. excellent customer service on top of that. When i was in SF the reception was solid all around except when i was on BART. rates are great too (im on a shared plan with my gf)

Thumbs up for T-Mobile here. I've had their nationwide plan for 2 years, and recently, my brother and mom switched over from AT&T to T-Moblie. Excellent service in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Verizon is the best you can get. I have had Cingular, ATT,and T-Moible (Deutsche Telecom) and verizon is the only one I recommend. Ohh and it may be an annoying commercial but in real life it keeps me sane.

The massive exodus of AT&T users to largely T-Mobile is why AT&T got sold.

I got really tired of 20 minute waits for CSR's @ AT&T to get to me. Wasn't mad @ them, but WTF is management thinking making me wait so freaking long with all the other cell phone service providers out there begging for my business.

Also, if you buy one, get it from Amazon, T-Mobile dealers can rarely match Amazon's prices with the rebates.

T-mobile is perfectly fine.

If you do get one, find an asian cellular phone dealer in San Francisco. They can usually have you walking out the door with a new phone (almost any phone) for free, no tax, and sometimes even with a bonus rebate.

They suffer from the same performance shortfalls as all the other GSM carriers. That said, if you are going to go GSM, go TMobile. I've found service fairly spotty w/ both Cingular and TMobile in the bay area. In LA they're both pretty good though.

How do you think the AT&T/Cingular merger will affect this?
I don't think it will effect it at all... It was my understanding that Cingular owns all the towers in CA, and while TMobile runs a seperate network they share the towers so your reception should not change. Now I know from experience that Cingular blows ass in the east bay, I would always get dropped calls or network is busy. I can only imagine a merger would worsen this problem.

Also I noticed you said something about Marin? I don't actually know... but I would guess the GSM would not be so hot in much of Marin county. I had an Aunt who lived in Novato and it was very hilly w/ a decent amount of trees so I imagine there are a lot of blind spots... not to mention the towers tend to be further from upper class homes. I lived in a part of SoCal that was somewhat similar, higher density though but that area was still bad for GSM.

I live in Sunnyvale here and the service is pretty good except that my house has poor to no signal.

Generally, I would say Tmobile has very good customer service and the rate is top-notch compared to whichever company. Besides, they paid the rebate really quick, I had my rebate check back within 3 weeks of mailing it. So, yeah I like the service so far.

i've used them for a number of years. do they care i'm a long term customer? no. bastads. i try those retention tricks like so many of you do with Sprint PCS, no go, never. i've tried a number of diffferent times. i like them because they have the least out of pocket expense imho, you get a damn nice phone for free or you may even make money, and decent plans.

one thing though, over the past 1.2 years, their service has gone DOWNHILL. sure, you get connected to a csr relatively fast, but they are a55holes esp. accounting department. better than cingular? yeah. better than the rest? can't say.

T-Mobile user here in Salem, OR. Used to be with verizon, but switched about 2 months ago because big v's cs sucks.

No problems here. Reception is great, and I haven't had a dropped call yet. Sure, the coverage area is less, but I have yet to go out of T-Mobile's service area in the 2 months I've been with them.

Ya, we've had tons of customers coming in wanting to port from AT&T to us. I'm not complaining :D. The Amazon prices get ridiculous sometimes...which makes it tough for us to match. But, we always try our best to do so.

Another reason to buy online or directly from the t-mobile sales department (800-tmobile) is that you don't have to deal with someone who's willing to lie or someone who is more worried about getting your signature on a contract than they are getting you what you want --stupid commissioned sales people. :| I have had to call dealers WAY too often to see wtf is going on and why the hell they pulled the crap they did or why they're so freaking stupid. Can you believe I have dealers asking me "well, why this? And why that? How does this and that work?" --and when I ask them "isn't this your job to know? What the hell are you telling customers!?" I get a "...duh... um...." response.

I do, however, get quite a bit of gratification from taking all their information from our system and passing it up to corporate in a report to have that dealer investigated. Sometimes it pays to be a grunt in customer care.

Sure, it won't work everywhere. But, if it works where you need it to then T-Mobile won't be a problem. Some people don't have Verizon because it doesn't work where they need it to work...and they have the "largest footprint".

Isn't T-Mobile the only provider with 1 yr. contracts that give you free phones?

Correct!

AT&T allows you to get free phones with 1 year contracts.

AT&T also sucks big hair balls. Why do you think everyone was flocking away from them?

LOL. Ya, they are pretty bad. One of my old co-worker's moved to San Diego to work for AT&T. After about 5-6 months, he was back up here working for T-Mobile. Too many problems with them!!

I wasn't suggesting anything to the contrary:) I can fully agree with your assessment as it pertains to my provider as well.

I wouldn't recommend Sprint PCS in CA ;) . But ya, I had a bad 2 years with them. It's amazing how 1 unhappy customer can discourage lots of potential customers. Word of mouth is how we make our money!

Classic example....

Person A,B,C,D,E.....etc: I was thinking of getting T-Mobile. They seem to have good rates
Person B: T-Mobile sucks. Don't go with them. (with no explanation)
Person A,B,C,D,E.....etc.: Ok

Just curious. How many of those are calls to direct dealers as opposed to authorized dealers? We have to deal with a lot of b.s. from customers who were told some shady things by authorized dealers. The people I work with are great. Even when someone is struggling to meet quota, we all still provide excellent customer service to people who are inquiring about phones.
