POLL: Is Nissan on the right track?

What do you mean turned the company around? How long ago are you talking? Ever seen the 300zx's from 12 or so years ago?

about 8 years ago, the maxima was positioned as an upscale sports sedan, the camry and accord were positioned as family sedans. even tho the camry and accord moved to the exact same type of vehicle as the maxima they aren't perceived that way (i know majority of consumers are idiots).

nissan also struggled for about 4 yrs. they went from being one of the hottest car companies (in the 80's) to worst car companies during the 90's. look it up. their sales went to pot. they struggled with quality control. their models were always a few years behind, even the latest reincarnation of the maxima came out about 3 yrs too late. the model before had to go against some pretty nice camry's and accords. the maxima was just outclassed then.

Nissan has just started making a comeback. the new SUV, the Altima, the Sentra. nice models. but it will take some time. they will come out w/ a new maxima here very soon also.

I guess you're right. The cars have been kinda ugly in the past few years. Early 90s Nissan's were incredible, though. Stylish and reliable as can be.

So they had a bad 6 years (95-2001). Still better than domestics during that timeframe, though.

The new Altima and SE-R are amazing. Maybe I'll get one in 10 years when my '92 Sentra kicks the bucket.

What's the difference between "maybe" and "not sure, dunno" ? I voted yes, even though when the new style Maxima first came out I thought it was really ugly...doesn't look so bad now. Plus the new Altima looks hot, even though the interior is somewhat bland.

Yes they have.. i remember 3-4 years ago before i bought my first nissan-- nissans stock was in the dumps.. the company was going downhill, and sales werent so hot.

but then the new sentra, the new altima, the xterra, now the se-r and the new Z--- and their reliablity and performance are well beyond honda and toyota. Nissan rocks, nissan dealerships have nice people and the serivce is great. i'm a nissan owner for life now.

Nissan has really turned it around....maybe because the Japanese don't run it anymore. With the breakup of long-standing relationships with suppliers that just weren't profitable, closing factories in Japan (got a lot of heat not too long ago), Nissan is basically doing what it should have done long ago. They are actually doing business now, instead of the bend over and take it approach from before.

Nissan established a performance image, both with its regular and upscale division, Infiniti. They are gradually returning to that, and are seeing sales improve. But I wonder how long they can maintain their vision, and how that vision will adapt to encompass future models.

and their reliablity and performance are well beyond honda and toyota
i dunno about this statement, i think it's definitely debateable...you're too damn biased ralli-spec 😉 j/k

Nissan is definitley an example of a company that has really turned themselves around.
Thumbs up for Nissan!

<< and their reliablity and performance are well beyond honda and toyota. >>

Performance, yes. Reliability...not quite there yet.

There's more to the equation than just looks and performance. The fact that Honda and Toyota stomp Nissan badly in sales proves just that. The typical American consumer is not interested in performance and goo goo ga ga looks. Americans are interested in sedans, SUV's, and pickup trucks...sporty vehicles take on a niche market. That's the reason why the Accord, Camry, and Taurus (all rather bland/understated) are the best selling cars in America and Nissan is no where close.

It is your opinion, and you are wrong 😉
Ever look up nissan in Consumer reports? How Maxima has all full red circles for reliability. Does Camry have that? Didn't think so. Also, I don't remember Maxima developing sludge in it's V6. No, the best V6 in US for 8 years running doesn't develop sludge. The toyota's engine does.
You are right that people buy niche cars. Nissan's performance Niche is growing, while toyota's baby boomer niche is going to start dying off soon. I think the younger generation is more excited about Altima, Maxima and Sentra then they are about Camry, Avalon or Corolla. I for one wouldn't touch a toyota, except maybe celica till I am 50.

You're going to sit here and tell me that Toyota as a whole is inferior in reliability to Nissan? Americans may be a lot of things, but they wouldn't make the Camry the best selling car for 5 out of 6 years if it had more problems than Nissan. If Camrys were so friggen bad, they wouldn't be selling ~400,000 of them for years on end. Toyota's are practically bulletproof and last forever; that's why people buy them. Same for Honda. There is just something about Nissan vehicles that Americans don't find as appealing as Hondas and Toyotas. Can you tell me what that is?:Q

And 70% of Camrys are 4-cylinder, not V6's...shows you that Americans don't care about performance...just safe, RELIABLE, DEPENDABLE, vehicles.

The Camry has made its name in being long-lasting, efficient, boring, and people-friendly. The Maxima has built its reputation on performance. Anyway, Toyota and Honda weren't the ones that needed to bailed out by the French😉

that definitely smells of fanboi speak.

it's truth. in the 70's Nissan was the UP and Coming. everyone spoke of Datsun / Nissan as the auto maker to emulate.
During the same period of Time FORD was the worst car company in america.

in the 80's the very opposite was true. Ford had totally turned EVERYTHING around And Nissan was struggling.

90's ford did better than nissan overall. Ford maintained market share gained in 80's. nissan continued to lose market share.

now 00's. Ford is definitely hurting and Nissan has totally turned it around.

Don't ask me why i chose Ford to compare w/ nissan, except that they seem to have been going in opposite directions during each decade.
