So what do you think? I have to say that the only times I've ever heard a son call his dad sir is when they both got out of a pickup truck and they're picking up lumber, fishing tackle, or auto parts (you get my drift).

My dad never wanted me to call him sir, but he did teach me to call other men sir.

I now find my self saying things like "Thank you, sir" and "How do you do, sir" and occasionally "Yes, sir" when talking to people.

I never ever called my dad sir, but working at a police department, I've found it's easier just to say "Morning sir," instead of keeping the titles (Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Director, etc.) straight. But honestly, I don't think it's necessary to have a son call his father sir. But I plan on teaching any child I have to refer to other grown men as "sir."

Never seen anyone call their dad sir. To me, sir would be a step down from calling your dad father. I think father/dad carries the most respect. Sir is just a formal term for another adult male. If you called your dad sir, to me, it would mean you are distancing yourself from your own father as well as showing that you lack a real relationship.

It's good manners, he should call you dad unless it's after a question where he should say yes sir as a show of respect that you are asking him to do/say something and that he acknoledges the seniority.

I drive a pickup, I buy lumber, auto parts, and I like to fish...?

I really don't get the analogy here...

I call other people Sir sometimes but never called family members Sir. I normally use it for people as a way of showing respect.

It's not a good or bad idea. It's just something that some people do. It's not my place to judge them.

Isn't it weird to say that rednecks have manners or respect? Especially in a derogatory way.

It's not a redneck thing, it's a southern thing.
They also refer to people as Miss or Mr. followed by their first name. That always sounded funny to me.

I wouldn't do that. I think it creates an isolation between you and your child.

Although, I think the world would be a much better place if people who weren't on a "first name basis" called each other by Sir/Ma'am and Mr or Ms so-and-so. I think the atmosphere of respect for each other would really make things better.

Also more of a military thing. I would have never characterized it as a "redneck" trait. I'd say it shows respect with possible emotional distance, but above all respect. Then again I understand why alot of you wouldn't get that...

Get what, that a kid should see their dad as a corporal instead of a dad? No, I guess we don't.
