i think the exact opposite. pc's should be seen, not heard. it doesn't directly matter that you can't hear your pc, you don't have to hear/feel it change gears or strain like you would in a car. kind of like how it doesn't matter that you can't hear the electric elements on an electric stove. you know your cooking because its hot. you know your pc is working because your using it. motherboards halt systems if cpu fans fail or if cpu overheats anyhow. one can monitor fanspeeds from os. set warnings/actions based on temperature/fan failure in software.

Shrug. I guess it just doesen't bother me enough to care.. Although, I do like challenges. It would be cool to setup a PC with just a monster CPU heatsink and no fan.

I set up a silent PC once. I found the biggest heatsink I could fit on the CPU, pulled the fan out of the PSU, and wrapped the hard drive in bubble wrap and stuck it in a 5 1/4" bay.

It worked fine until it was eventually retired, and you couldn't hear it at all.
