I currently have a 6800GT, and decided to use Vista Business (yes, im getting this all free for experience).

But im interested in people's experience using Vista with older cards.

Ive made a poll.

So should i stick with win xp or try out Vista?

Thanks for all the input.

That's really a question that YOU should answer for yourself. ;)

GF 6/7 series actually have less quirks than 8 series with Vista. Still you might experience BSOD once every while. So far my Vista experience has been smooth and joyable, even with 6200 TC, although 3D transparent windows were choppy. With an 6800 GT you should have no problem with Vista on video front. What's more important at this point is whether to go with 64-bit or 32-bit and that can be a tough decision because you actually do encounter compatibility problems with 64-bit support from various hardware/software. But in most cases I've found work-arounds, and I think the benefit of 4GB is bigger than the compatibility annoyance. (this is MY opinion, and I totally understand that others might think otherwise) Especially with the RAM prices so cheap these days. I even wish 2GB DIMMs were just as cheap so i could go for 8GB RAM.

Normal desktop is fine, but its the 3d side of things that might ah heck me off.

edit - currently, im using a p4 northwood @ 3.0ghz which scores 4.3, but only have 1gb of ram. Im thinking of buying another gig, but this is slow me down to save money for a complete upgrade.

I heard more Ram you have the better on Vista, is that true?

I was using RC2 with my 6800GS, and i couldn't overclock it, nor could i get any games to run smoothly.

Needless to say, i'm back with XP ;)

Could have been the fact it was RC2, but it couldn't do anything XP can't do faster right now, so i'm happy right now :)

Got my 6800GS at 576/1377 right now, so basically it's blowing the barn doors of a 6800U, and probably well into 7600GT territory...

No idea.

Since i couldn't get anything running smoothly at stock, even at 1024, i didn't even bother trying.

Same here.

Well, no problems unless I try to play games newer than about 2004 :p

Well, I didn't know overclocking was a concern? Currently under 64-bit Vista, the only practical way of overclocking NV cards is BIOS flash. For 32-bit Vista, you can use the latest ATI tool to overclock 6/7/8 series cards.

Dug777: How do you mean you couldn't run smooth @1024 (1024x768?)? With a 6800 GS? What was your Windows Experience Index score? Score of mere 2.0+ should handle 3D desktop with no problem. 6800 GT will DEFINITELY give 5.9 (the maximum score currently) for 'Graphics' subscore, and maybe around 4.5~5.0 for 'Gaming Graphics' subscore.

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with 6600 since day one but I don't play games on it. Over all I haven't had a single crash within Windows environment.

I just installed Home Basic on my wife's PC, and she is running a 64MB MX440 :D along with a P4 2.26GHz CPU, 1.5GB PC2700 RAM, and 80GB WD hdd.

It seems to be chugging along fine, but I do notice some lag here and there, lol. She only uses the PC for internet browsing, so it will probably be sufficient for the time being.

Her Windows Experience Index score is 1.0 due to the GPU rating, but I think it'd be up around 3.8?? maybe with a new card. I'm not in front of it right now so I'm not sure what the next lowest number is.

I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a GeForce Go 6800 and only 1GB of RAM. Runs everything just fine.

Rivatuner runs well enough in Vista 64 if you disable driver signing during each boot. Well enough to OC and control the GPU fan speed at least.

Thanks for the reply guys, the only games i might be playing are warcraft3, and maybe a bit of openGL gaming e.g quake4/doom3.

Yea, i get a score of 5.9 for "graphics" subscore, but the final score is 4.3 due to the CPU.

What are the current drivers people are using?

Thank god rivatuner can change fan speed, because i always set the NV5 silencer fan speed to 100% or not much air is being pushed out the back. OCing and UCIng, since i use 2d/3d clocks for the 6800GT.

How about OCing the CPU side of things?

Aero was great with my 6600gt, but the overall performance hit in games made me switch back until an upgrade.

GF2 MX and no Vista issues aside from I can't use Aero. Everything smooth(of course I ain't gaming). Still waiting till ATI/AMD gets their stuff out to upgrade or better yet I'll likely just wait for Crysis and UT3 since those are the only games I'm looking forward to.

I ran Vista Ultimate perfectly on my Sapphire Radeon X800XT PE, is quite weird that the Aero Glass Interface dind't increase the GPU temperature at all.
