At my call centre job, we all have internet access. However, it is company policy that anyone surfing the internet at their computer, including on breaks, is terminated immediately. No questions asked.

If we bring a cell phone in the building and are caught--even on breaks--terminated immediately.

Call in sick more than once a month, terminated.

But back to the point, can you surf the internet at work?

Yes, thank goodness. No restrictions here, but those that I put on myself. 😉

With rules that strict, I'm surprised people would work there? Is it a high level security job or something?

I work for a national ISP, so I have free reign of the net 😀

they hire basically anyone who applies.

>> No, it is a violation of company policy

That is the rule. Working for a defense contractor, my employer uses the phrasing of "mischarging" when canning you.

But I voted for:
>> Yes, but only on breaks

Simply because the term abuse is best applied. Stories of firing usually involve casual internet use of about 4 hours a day. So, as long as you don't abuse it, you are fine. I use the net maybe 15 minutes a day for personal use. Most days 5-10 minutes. If they fire me over that, so be it. I wouldn't work for them anymore if that's there concern in life.

I'm curious...which call center?

I'm temporarily working at a call center and got caught surfing the web a few days ago. Got written up. Oh, but if you pass by the people who tell us we can't do jack, you'll see them surfing ebay all day long. Fvcking hypocrites.

I answer calls for The Brick, HomeShow, Sleep Better, and United Furniture Warehouse. They are all the same company, but I'm not allowed to tell the customer that.

Ranting about general issues is one thing but I'm amazed at how many people post supposedly confidential information about their workplace. Even if it's not strictly confidential, it's a call on questionable ethics.

I worked at a Time Warner call center and I could not use the internet, ever. It sucked, big time. I think I would have been able to keep my sanity had I been allowed to surf the net while being yelled at by hundreds of people.

I work 3.5 hours a day and have unlimited internet access. The first thing I do when I get to work is check my email and AT of course. I always get my work done and thats all that matters. Just gotta be careful and make sure no outsiders when looking at nsfw stuff🙂

i dont care. the company sucks. and there are probably 5 people on the forum who shop on the stores...the secret is out!

I've browsed here for a couple hours once to pass time. I had finished all my work and notified my supervisor. He didn't have anything for me.

I'll drop by here during the work day on several small breaks. I'd say 30 minutes total. I get to work 15 minutes early (saves gas, less traffic), and I don't take my 30 minute breaks usually so it works out.

Excellent, they are re-arranging our 'cubicles'. Before we had walls to our left and right so we were never too close to anyone, but now we will work elbow to elbow!

Woot
