The formula for calculating the top 250 films gives a true Bayesian estimate:
weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the top 250 (currently 1250)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.9)
note: for this top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.
That's the IMDB formula, not just averaging, that's the stupid way. Anyway, I've seen 5 of them, and anyone who thinks Shawshank shouldn't be up there...well...go watch it again...I don't think LotR should be up there in the top 10, but at least on the top 250 list somewhere. The Usual Suspects should definitely be in the top 10 and so should Memento. I, personally, didn't think the Godfather was THAT good, well good enough to earn #1.
