Old thread, I know. But better than making a new one.
Just saw the movie for the first time. (Yes, I am a bit late. 😛 Couldn't bring myself to see it in the theater.)
Was Algren (Tom Cruise) the last Samurai? That really depends. Not that I dare to actually compare the two films, but it can be seen kind of like Return of the Jedi. At the end of the battle, was Anakin a Jedi? Or Dark Lord of the Sith?
My point is: What does it mean to be Samurai? Is it having all of the "neat toys," or is it living the lifestyle?
I personaly believe it is living the lifestyle. And Algren did live the lifestyle. Sometimes, one must accept personal dishonor in order to advance the honor of another, more worthy man. Algren needed to live in order to "set things right." He had to speak to the emperor, he had to tell the people how Katsumoto lived.
But I voted no. 😛 As much as I believe Algren is Samurai, I also beleive Katsumoto was the Last Samurai.
Just like Nathaniel "Hawkeye" Poe was not the Last of The Mohicans. Chingachgook was. 😉
