[POLL] - if you owned a company, would you limit Internet access ?

we all know surfing means no work is usually being done, but we also know we're not exactly busy for all 40 hours a week either... what would you do ?

Isn't it Saturday? (I dont know if the poster in question posts during weekdays though).

But I can see blocking non-work things becoming important if some employees weren't doing their jobs.

I'd block NSFW sites to start out, and then see if thats enough. I know from 1st hand experience how time consuming the internet can be at work.

I let them surf whatever they want and log all their visits.

When it comes to laying off some one, I look at who has been spending the most time surfing the net.

i would allow all and log all activity.
then do a monthly/quarterly review with each employee to discuss the usefulness of their internet activity to the company's business goals

I'm thinking - if you allow all, employees assume it is ok to surf all the time so long as they have no immediate work to be done. This is bad for motivation and self-drive. Just because you're not busy does not mean you don't need to improve yourself or your work... know what I mean ?

At the very least, let them know they are being watched...

I'm one of three people here that has relatively free rein over the internet (No one can get to NSFW). Everyone else is blocked for mail explicitly and then anything that might not be necessary for work. I supervise the surfcontrol so I can make any adjustments I feel might be...we'll say necessary.

you can't force people to be motivated and self-driven, if you restrict the internet, those people without motivation and self-drive will just chit-chat around the water cooler or something. you're better off hiring people with motivation and self-drive to begin with.

My company policy is that you can surf on "authorized" break. But noone really cares as long as you get your work done.

If you retrict them or completely stop access to internet, people will find another way to get away: they hang around in other's cubicle, cigarette break, coffee break, bathroom break...etc

Its really depend on who you hire and if they have some self control.
