I like HP's workstation line of computers. I have a HP Kayak and wouldn't mind buying another HP workstation at all. Their parts are not proprietary for the most part so you can switch out components very easily and their cases look very very nice! Mine has a mini lcd screen on the front of my computer, I should go and hack that baby. :D

Look at their lineup, especuially the visualize series

Compaq. My servers at work are all Compaq, dating back to 850R's all the way to new DL380G2 models and we've never had a hardware failure that wasn't caused by some outside occurance. No, I take that back I did have a CD ROM fail in a 2500 a few months ago. We use Dell and Compaq workstations and by far the Dell's have had higher failure rates. Plus the couple of Dell servers we've brought in to evaluate have been crap. Look cheap, have crap parts, and even though we ordered two identical servers at the same time to test they had different brands of CD ROMS, hard drives, and even SCSI controllers.

LMAO. Having the unfortunate honor of working with these POS's, I can only agree with you.

<< In my experiences, both Dell & Gateway use pretty standard parts in their systems. You obviously don't get overclocking features. Although in one Gateway system that I worked on for a friend I reconized the MB as an Asus. I then did a little more checking on it & sure enough it was the Asus A7V (KT133 MB). We then got ambitious & flashed the BIOS (using a BIOS SAVIOUR) to the Asus Bios & it worked :). He now has a rebadged Asus motherboard for all intents & purposes. >>

Yeah, a friend of mine bought a Gateway (I swear I tried to stop him :Q ) and it has an MSi K7T (KT133) mobo in it. My dad's Dell P4 has an Asus P4T (i850) in it. Compaqs and HPs, AFAIK, usually have FIC and ECS mobos in them.

I agree with Russ, the pre-builts I see with problems are most often Compaq, closely followed by HP

The funny thing is, those two are only second and third on the list of junk that comes in my door. Number one, by a wide margin, is a local outfit that sells piles of cheap systems built with PC Chips "everything and the kitchen sink" motherboards. I have three of theirs in for repair right now.

I'd buy a Mac because they are the only ones that run the best operating system on the market. The mac OS!

I guess I would give Russ my credit card number and wait a week.
Now if I had to go with one of the biggies, I would go with Micron, then Dell.
Everything else is shades of garbage.
