I will say I do recommend their laptops though. You really do get what you pay for.

No, absolutely not. The mac was never really intended to be a gaming computer, and it shows.

The highest end gaming graphics card officially supported by OS X is the 8800GT and costs $240 from Apple. For the same money, you can get a GTX 260 for your PC. Plus, the only Mac you can actually upgrade is the Mac Pro, which starts at $2k+.

Don't get me wrong, I like my mini, but I'll stick to my PC and Xbox 360 for gaming.

If I want a non-compatible computer, I'll use Linux(which I do on my Eee). I don't like Apples policies, and have no desire to support them. Honestly, I just enjoy hating on Apple. It makes me happy :^P I'm not into sports, so O/S rivalries are where I get my thrills. My team is MS, but I'm also interested in the dark horse, Linux ;^)

I wouldn't switch to it even if it was only the OS. As I said for Linux in the other thread, I'm used to Windows by now and I don't like what I've seen of the Mac UI. The support for top end hardware and general customizability also seem to be lacking from what people say.

There was actually a time in the late 80s and early 90s when the Mac had a wide selection of its own great games, and the Mac ports of DOS games often had far better graphics and audio. Those days are long gone, however.

I love Vista, and I see the standardization of Windows as a wonderful thing. That, and me buying the machines I've built would cost me thousands upon thousands from Apple. Games just wouldn't be enough to convert me.

No. I'd much prefer Linux as the alternative rather than Mac. Linux= Free, Open source, apps galore. Native Mac games would just be another Windows (Costly, hardware lock in, Closed source).

Apple is truly only hurting themselves by requiring you to buy their hardware in order to use their software. I can hardly believe that such a barbaric business model has had any success at all. Imagine having to purchase a special computer from Adobe in order to use Photoshop, and it has all of the same components as your PC (if not worse) with a huge markup attached.

It works because once people enjoy the OS they are hooked (like me). I'm always going to buy Apple hardware now on top of PC hardware for gaming, or I'll just bootcamp. I'm willing to pay the price premium because I'm invested - but as the hating towards OS X on this thread shows, many or not. To each his own :p

Also, while I can see that the OS has some advantages, personal experience drives me away.

It gets a resounding "meh" from me.

God no.

I hate the Mac. If more games went over to it I'd probably have to give up gaming entirely and just use Linux for browsing the web.

The major achilles heel of Linux is battery life. OSX is far better. And I'm pondering a MacBook for my next laptop, regardless of whether it will run OSX or Ubuntu.

Will my old printer run under vista?

No.

Will my old $350 SCSI film scanner run under Vista?

No.

Will an old Sun Microsystems server run under any version of windows?

Hell no.

And yet - magically - all of them work under Linux.

I have a drawer full of winmodems and wireless adapters that don't work under Linux. That's why my Eeepc is my first full time Linux machine. It's the first computer I've had where all the hardware works.

Edit:
Not to mention all the software that's Windows only. Where's the Linux Foobar?

If Apple freely licensed their OS so you could install it on any PC, I highly doubt they'd gain enough market share for it to be worth it to them. If it was so easy to take market share away from the 800 pound gorilla that is Microsoft, then Linux would have done it a long time ago.

The majority of Apples marketshare has come from college students wanting to fit in with the most recent trend. Nothing more, nothing less. Windows is still preferred by most everyone else and will remain as such.

No because of the hardware lock in. The OS is fine ~ anyone who thinks it sucks is just in denial. Hardware + Mark Up doesn't interest me very much. I like the 400 dollar laptop I have, and I like my system that is faster than 2k Apple System for barely 1/3rd the cost.

That said, I use vista/xp and i haven't touched linux in a while. I used to use linux 90%+ of the time, but what holds me back these days in lightroom. I simply need to use it a LOT. Otherwise everything i play (wow, wc3) can be done in linux through wine, every program i use is opensource anyways (firefox, open office, pidgin), and i already know enough about linux to find suitable replacements for windows only programs like foobar. All of this doesn't prevent my FS/HTPC from running on Linux.

It really comes down to financial reasons - and gone are the days where Apple was so much more stable that constant crashes on Windows meant lost productivity.

No, even discounting pricing, their ad campaigns are enough to make me want to punch the smug suckers.

No, because it would require me to buy an Apple computer. If Apple opened the OS to anyone to use, then I probably would switch. I am not a fan of many things that Microsoft does with their operating system, so some competition would be really welcome by me.

You guys all know that Mac is a lifestyle choice right? It has nothing to do with games or price. You just aren't cool unless you have a Mac.

With that being said, I'm not very cool. ;)

I've been using Linux (mostly Ubuntu) for about a year and it's come a long way even in that span of time. I've been running Intrepid on my laptop since a few days after it went live and they fixed a lot of the major issues it had with laptops. The battery life is comparable to XP and, for the first time, my Broadcom wireless works out of the box. Very slick. The next version (Jaunty Jackelope) looks like another fairly major overhaul, too, so I'm looking forward to messing around with it.

As far as Apple and OS X goes, though, I just don't see myself ever getting one for a whole lot of different reasons. I'm definitely not an Apple hater or anything, but their business model really isn't much different from MS's, and while they're slightly (very, very slightly) more open to open source than MS is, their hard stance on hardware compatibility is much worse than MS could ever get away with. Apple is way too obnoxiously proprietary for me, and their pursuit of litigation for anyone using the word "Apple" in their name in virtually any industry is beyond ridiculous.

I refuse to hand over large sums of my money to a company trying to copyright a fruit. That said, I've got an iPod Nano I'm generally pretty happy with (was a Christmas present), except for the fact that it's a monstrous pain to use it with anything but iTunes. Not to mention my car stereo has a built-in iPod controller so I don't have to worry about messing around with CDs while driving.
