Kia was near the bottom and Hyundai was in the lower tier with Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Isuzu, etc. http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/jdpower/11054/
I still drool whenever I see a nice VW Passat but then I remember it's a VW.
VW's are solid cars... you're trippin' VW has been making outstanding cars for over 10 years now.... they are really solid and very safe. They pay a great deal of attention to detail. -you just got pwnd
You are the one trippin' my fine feathered friend, don't ask why I just referred to you as my FFF because I dunno why. Once VW's reach the pinnacle of reliability and quality that Honda/Toyota have achieved then I will consider purchasing one. Until then I will continue to just drool and admire from afar.

I was jus kiddin'... i still refer to you as my FFF... no worries, its all good in the 'hood.

You're right that VW's aren't that reliable, and they ARE expensive to maintain. I have an acura, and it's been a great car. Super low maintenance expense, and very reliable.

Things look nearly identical to me. But one is advertized as 3 years and the other 10 years.

the quoted number always refers to the warantee on the powertrain. the 'bumper-to-bumper' warantee period is always a fraction of the powertrain warantee period. and what honda only has a 3 yr warantee??

I'll buy Kia/Hyundai if I owned a car rental place. I figure once they reach 24k miles, I'll auction them off and buy new ones.

course not. Even with the warranty it's a tough sell with those things to me, but without one not a chance in hell.

100k is 2 years of driving for me. If they gave me a 3 year 150k warranty and made it in the USA I might consider it.

Correct, but lets look at just the powertrain. Powertrain problems a 10 year Kia warantee that was sold once will only be waranteed for 6 years yet the same problem in a 3 year Honda warranty will likely be waranteed for 8 years.

The rest of the non-powertrain warantee is almost identical. The 10 vs 3 comparison is therefore quite misleading (as it only applies to a very limited subset of powertrain parts). I linked the Honda warranty manual for 2003 if you want an example. For another example I bought a Honda Civic in 2001 and it was a 3 year warranty (however it is a bit better than the 2003 warantee)

Just ain't worth it.

The whole appeal of a Hyundai is that it has a long warranty and is inexpensive for what you get. If you take one of those factors away of course sales would go down. I own two Hyundais. I based my purchases more on talking to people, reading online reviews, and ACTUALLY DRIVING THE CARS...which I'd wager 99% of the people posting in this thread have not.

soo... what did you vote? :D

I forgot to vote.

It would depend on what warranty they offered. I wouldn't buy any car with NO warranty. But if it was cut in half to five years I would still buy it based on the fact that I've had my 1st Hyundai for over 2 years now without any problems. And I've driven the sh!t out of it.

I would buy it as a commuter car,

And I think thats why most people buy them. No one is buying a Hyundai to show off. Some people just don't need expensive cars to feel important.

Well Hondas and Toyotas aren't that much more expensive and you get MUCH better quality and reliability. There is really no contest. Hyundais/KIA's are just for cheapskates :D

If Honda and Toyota is not more expensive than Kia, I would definitly buy Honda or Toyota, but in fact, they are not. I bought my 2002 Sedona last year for $17800, it is a basic one without ABS, 2003 Sienna is about $23500 and 2004 Sienna is about $26000, about Honda odyssey, LX cost about $28000 and EX about $31600 I got a Kia Rio recently for $8700 minus $1000 loyalty rebate with AT & AC, a similar echo is about $12300, corolla about $13500 for CE. Civic DX is about $13500. Of course, if you have enough money to spend, corolla & civic will give you better ride, better resale value and stronger engine and a lot more dealer available, I am poor, I need a transportation to take me from point a to b, since recently summer time in LA temperature reach high 90s all the time, I need AT & AC, beside that, everything is not neccessary to me. I can't tell you how reliable or unreliable is their car 'cos I am still a new owner, even I own a sedona for 1 year already, I did not need any repair so far, I can't tell you the future, but I drove it with bunch of luggages, 8 people to LV several times, No Cal couple times, yosemite, San Diego for many times, never have any problem except I only got 22mpg in the long trip compare to 26mpg of odyssey. I am wondering for those people said Kia Hyundai is bad, did you ever own one of them? Or you saw the people writting about them in internet? Before I bought it, I was stupid enought to talk to a lot of Kia owners face to face, and I went to their service dept and talk to the owner of theose service car. I do believe pre-2K is junk, my friend has an excel, unfortunate, he is not Mr. Rodney King who can drive his excel faster than a police car, but talking to the owner really change my mind.

I know that those results are only for one model year, but that is damn impressive!

Since 2000, they improved dramatically, like 2002 rio and 2003 rio, they change suspension, engine, tranny, tires, some cosmetics, I don't think corolla or civic will do a major change within the same model style, they probably won't make some or big changes until new model style is out.

whoa! lets not go to far! a lifetime of BJ's? oh yeah!

My mother-in-law has a 99 hyundai not sure the model the cheap car. it has had many problems. heck it had the transmission replaced 3 times. But a firend of mine's wife has a new one 03 i think (same model) and she has put on about 30k miles and has yet to have any problems. It is a good car for the price.

I would buy a kia/hyundai if was going to keep the car until it fell apart. people that want to trade it in at 4-5 years are going to lise soo much money it aint funny. while they are good cars you really need to keep them for as long as they run.

Don't trust Honda too much.
I own an Acura Integra 1994 (120K miles), and recently it started to make a series of problems.
Radiator, A/C, strange noise...
I paid almost $1,000 for the repairs, and another grand is waiting to get out of my pocket.
I will probably not buy a Honda car in the future.

VW owner here ;).

Yes, they have some bad cars. More to the point, they have some bad model years on certain cars (see Golf, Jetta). That doesn't mean every car (or model year) they make is unreliable. In fact, the majority of cars they make are reliable.

The MKII's were extremely reliable. The MKIII's weren't. The MKIV's have a few issues but they have (seemed) to overcome them. Time will tell.

I've driven VW's since I was 17 and don't see myself changing to another manufacturer anytime soon. I've owned 2 MKII's and 2 MKIV's in that time and have loved every single one.

My gf needed to buy a car and she only had 2K for down payment. After looking around, Hyundai offered the most for the money. She bought a 03 Accent with 0% down for 5 years. Her monthly payments are $171. Of course if she had the money, I would have told her to buy a Honda/Toyota, but for some of us, money IS an issue. Within 5 years I think she will be able to afford a better car and probably will hand it down to her little brother. I mean what else can you get for around 12K with 0% interest and a 10 yr/100K drivetrain, 5 yr/50K bumber to bumper warranty, free lifetime oil change from the dealer, and 3 years roadside assistance?

My dad has a 94 Hyundai H100 cargo van (not available in the US) and it has been VERY reliable. The only thing he has changed so far in 9 years is the radiator.
