poll : IBM HardDrives - 60gxp / 75gxp / 120gxp ?

i have a member of every family Deskstar since the deskstar 5...execpt the GXP120
but i would I am not about to recommend one....Reliability is questionable at best....

I voted "none". I do have a 75gxp in a video workstation at work and it whines like a banshee. It hasn't failed yet, but that noise and all the anecdotal complaints keeps me from buying one for home.

My 60 GXP is running now on this machine. No problems at all however I'm going with the new Seagate Baracuda with the fluiddrvie motor because of the noise on my new box.

Maxtor and WD are easy to find (B&M and online)

Seem to fail less

Have better warranty (will advance exchange)

are super fast (WD WD1200JB)

Hmmm hard choice

<< none of the above

You would bge crazy to even consider a IBM hard drive, unless you love to rma hard drives.

Budman, says it all. I would rather go with a 5400 RPM drive than risk data on a free GXP.

Ditto. There's a class action against IBM regarding the 75gxp of which I am a proud member of the class. 🙂

Oh, btw, I love my Maxtor. 😉

None. I bought a 60GB 60GXP last year becuase supposedly the 60GXPs were free from the defets that plagued the 75GXP series. Well surprise surprise, it failed last month. I am now running a 60GB Maxtor which is loud as all hell compared to the silent IBM, but I'll gladly take a little whine over drive failure any day.

I'd recommend Western Digital. I've had nothing but good luck with them.

well first, thank you in advance for all the -none of the above- votes. buy my question now is.. Which brand/model hd is the most reliable? speed/performance comes second priority to me.

I have 2 40gig 60GXPs and they are both working fine, and silent. I've always liked IBM drives, but I find myself listening for any strange noises out of fear they will fail like all the others have been. I just burned 16 CDs a few days ago backing up all my music, documents, d/led apps, ect.. Ohh yeah, and all my pr0n too😀

I just put a Maxtor in my parents PC and transfered all their important stuff over to it, as their 60GXP is making some crazy noise. I told my dad to just run it till it dies and I'll RMA it for him. It's a shame IBM let their drives goto sh!t.

I am loving my D740X Maxtor drive. I suggest you go the Maxtor route on this one.. either that or pay a bit more for a nice WD drive.

I have 3 Maxtors in my PC right now, and a Quantum Fireball plus LM in my other PC. They are all awesome drives. I don't have WD's anymore cause for a couple years there i thought they kinda sucked... now, I would buy WD again.
