Poll: I cut my cat off and it adds 30 hp....

Yea there is this kid I hang around that is telling me that if you wack the cat off of a eclipse gsi it's going to add 30 horsepower. Now I'm sitting here trying to tell him that he is totally wrong, but he's too stubborn to listin so here I am... What do you car savvy atot'ers think?

there's nothing at all that could be done to the exhaust on that car that would add 30hp. maypbe he menat 3hp?

Anyway.... the car only comes with 1 cat? My car has 4.....

I'm not too sure how many cats it has on there, I was under the assumption that it has one (dosen't every normal car with single exhaust only have one?)
no... he said 30, a number of times. actually he then corrected himself with 25, and then came back today with 27.8 or something goofy like that.

btw: what kid of car do you have that has 4 cats?

I get sooooooo annoyed/pissed when I hear people talk like this! A lot of kids at my school would think thats true too. Theyd think they get 15hp on the wheel from a K&HN filter, 25hp from a muffler, so on.

Cutting the Cat off does not add 30hp, depending on what kinda of engine he has and if he has forced induction, he could be losing hp if its a small engine since the backpressure helps smaller engines

He probably picked up a few hp, but he didn't even break 5 extra. My friend pulled the exhaust off his 64 Chevelle (283 V8) and ran open headers. At the drag strip it was worth a consistent 1 tenth of a second, so we guess 10 hp.

Anyways, fox body V8 mustangs had 4 cats.

I'd like to see what happens when he goes in for an emissions test (if they're required in your state).

The WRX has 3 cats... and if you remove all of them, you get ~20hp to the wheels which is pretty impressive. The car is really restricted and it shows.

I haven't heard of that much gain on the mitsu's however...

If I got rid of the cat and muffler on my 86 parisienne with a 305, I figure I'd gain aroudn 10hp....or around there?
But it'd probably be damm loud..... :Q
But then again, the tip does point towards the ground.. 😉

You sure its 4 cats? or is it 2 cats and 2 resonators?
>>

it's 4 cats.

That's pretty funny... And you got one vote saying it's true, lol. 🙂

I know someone like that. Those people can be entertaining.

Won't you negate your car insurance by doing this? I mean if you get in an accident and the insurance investigator sees no cat present?

Don't do that. Emission standards after 1974 require your cat converter. Not only will you make your car unable to get inspected you will only gain a couple of horse. Not worth the potential ticket. I run my 71 stang (351CJ) both open pipe and with dual chambers. LOUD, LOUD, LOUD!!! Keep those exhaust on or get an aftermarket Cat Back system. They breath more and are legal in most states (I think Cali has some restrictions).

it has absolutely no baring on insurance. as far as insurance is concerned, it's about as relevent as removing the radio antenna. If you cut the antenna off your car, and then you get in accident, they're still obligated to cover the damage, minus the antenna.

But no, the car won't pass emissions w/o the cat. This assumes you live in a state that requires emissions.

No, but you're insuring that your car doesn't stand a chance of passing an emissions inspection after screwing with your exhaust like this. You'll also void your warranty with modifications like this.

Man, ricers do some strange things for a few extra horsepower.

If remove your catalytic converter, and you live in any state that requires smog inspection, you'll never get your license renewed until it's replaced. If you get stopped for any other traffic violation, the cops can site you for that, too. If they find it was intentional, they may up the fine.

Even without that, you may want to consider that it's rude to stink up the air. :|

yes the gsi is turbo, I believe that it is one step below the gsx (which is awd turbo)...

Yea, I was watching horsepower tv the other day and they took a civic, but high flow exhaust on it, cold air intake and only gained about 7 hp...

I told the kid to come here and check it out and his response was 'you made it at a computer nerd website, how good do you think the information is there'... LOL! oh well, ignorant people are always funny.

<< Our first installment was a modification made at Dynamic Autosports. The straight pipe was designed to replace the factory catalytic converter with no cutting and welding for installation. With the cat replaced with the straight pipe, we picked up a whopping 27.9 hp. Due to the lower level of restriction we also noticed almost 2 psi of boost pressure over stock >>

http://www.importtuner.com/archives/tech/0901_tech01.jsp that is the link that he sent me...

and that is what he is basing his information from...

edit: fixed now

The article also says that previous to removal of a cat, they had a CAI, downpipe, and exhaust (doesn't say if it's turbo back, cat back, or just the back box, but i'm assuming cat back).
So they already have a free flowing exhaust but then have a restrictive cat. by replacing the cat with a straight pipe, they are removing the weak link in the system.

If your friend has a stock eclipse, removing the cat WONT gain 27.9 hp as the rest of the exhaust system is super restrictive. If he is gonna replace the rest of his exhaust system with a 3" turbo back system then he could see those gains potentially

<< Clear corners and VTEC emblems add 50 hp too >>

dont forget the stickers, they also add an additional 10 hp per pop. i heard the mugen ones actually can get an additional 15 hp 🙂
