What is HR 669?
H.R. 669 stands for House Resolution 669 and is titled "The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act". It is a bill currently before Congress that if passed will change the way that the US Government classifies animal species that are not native to the United States. H.R. 669 will make it illegal to breed and sell many animals that are very common in the pet trade.

What the hell are they thinking.

It's more like what the hell were the importers thinking. there are plenty of plants and animals that have been imported without thinking of the consiquences. Like the snakeheads from a few years ago, and kudzu that is taking over the south.

edit

also don't forget the cane toad that were introduced into australia and caused major problems there.

problem is they see a legit problem then don't think the legistlation through. same thing happened with the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) wich is causing many re-sale shops of toys and childrens clothing to close. Also as it is now you can't purchase childrens motorcycles either.

Looks like well thought out legislation. The FWS has to evaluate species to determine the likelihood of becoming established and causing problems. It is unfortunate this wasn't in place before so many non-natives were loosed on the land. Here in Arizona we're dealing with buffelgrass which threatens to wipe out the saguaro deserts, Lehman's love grass which has spread across the grasslands, fountain grass and Bermuda grass in the riparian areas. Plus we have killer bees and bull frogs (not native to the deserts and wipe out native toads, frogs, and fish).

Edit: The authors of the www.nohr669.com website don't seem to have read the bill. The bill does not automatically ban the importation of exotic species. The species have to show a potential for establishment. I haven't come across feral hamster colonies in my travels around the US.

People that voted yes, you understand all pet stores, mom and dads pet stores, suppliers. Would go broke? Cats and Dogs alone wont keep a store running.

Thats many jobs you know

I have been attacked by fire ants several times. No matter how many of those suckers you kill, they always come back. Hell, I could probably douse my entire county with DDT and they would come back. AFAIK, those were not intentionally brought here... at least I hope no one in their right mind would introduce those little suckers. Many of the major pests are introduced accidentally (no one intentionally brings them here).

So Removing Birds, Fishes, reptiles that are not native to the United States , and the rest wont impact any of the above stores?

Your statement is complete rubbish. Troll elsewhere.

Read the bill. It really isn't very long and it doesn't use many big words. The bill requires the FWS to first evaluate whether the exotic species have the potential to establish populations in the US. If not, end of story, the species aren't covered.

Read the bill. The bill specifically excludes species that are so common in the US already as to render import restrictions pointless.

Sorry, but if their job involves destroying the environment then I'm happy that they would lose their job.

Case closed. Who's pro invasive species? Only knee-jerk reactionary anti-environment mental-midget right wingers and misinformed members of the pet store lobby. One only needs to look at the woes of Australia to know that invasions of foreign species are a bad thing.

Wow, this bill is retarded. Technically, I would be in violation of it as my animals aren't technically native the US and were transported across state lines to get to me. This bill is almost as idiotic as HR875, which would make a private garden illegal.

I skimmed it. Its just another hastily crafted piece of unnecessary legislation that will end up costing thousands of jobs.

Nope, wrong. It's a very well targeted bill that takes a step toward solving a chronic and expensive problem.

Obviously your just being a dumb ass!
You have no clue how important this bill is to protect native wildlife and our rivers and forest from destructive instects and fish that are not native to America!

The rivers especially the Missisppi are already seeing a loss of native fish being taken over by very invasive creatyures...etc...
