[Poll]How old is your oldest "RUNNING" hard drive?

sorry, misread hard drive for hardware 🙂

i had a working 40meg Seagate from the very early 90's but i couldn't help myself so i took it apart. i'm looking at a 200meg WD from 93 though.

30MB hdd in an IBM PS/1 386 (the ones with the system power switch built in to the monitor). Actually, I gave it away about 6 months ago, but I started it up to make sure it worked first, and it booted right up.

this one made me laugh... I still think of my 15gig maxtor 7200 (circa 2000) as a relatively new drive 😱

Well, I do have a ~200MB WD drive that I think runs...

I haven't found a reason to throw away an 850MB, (5400 rpm?) WD which still works fine. I keep thinking I'll need it to test something with, because it ran well at 41 MHz PCI on an Abit BX chipset board. I'm not sure exactly how old it is, but I believe it came with a Pentium 90 machine.

My strategy for choosing HDD's, nowadays, is to buy a brand which recently had a large recall or relibility problem. I figure quality control will be "job one" for a while. I've been buying Westen Digitals for a few years (since the faulty cache incident), but since the Deathstar era came along, I was enticed into buying two Hitachi 120GB SATA's. 🙂 So far the plan has worked, as I've never had a failure with mine, a couple of friends, and a couple of family members I've bought drives for.

4.3GB Western Digital that is now in mother in-laws comp. bought brand new in 1998. used on a daily basis, still goin strong.

3.6 Gb seagate still being used. Its in a 166 mHz pentium and 32 mb EDO ram NEC desktop. Bought the computer new in the mid 90's and it still runs without a hitch. I just got rid of an 13 or so year old Packard Bell running Windows 3.1 last year, but I don't remember what was in it.

My oldest working HDD is from my old 286 I built up and it's a Conor 42Meg and still is in perfect shape. Bought it new for the 286.

Next oldest is a 1.2 Gig Quantum Fireball which is still error free and in an old server. Bought it brand new also.

I recently sold my spare drives that weren't in operation. A Quantum 20GB from ~2000 and a Maxtor 40GB from the same time. Oldest drive now is actually our biggest: a 160GB Maxtor DM9+.

oldest one currently in operation would be my 20GB Maxtor DM60 in my PC upstairs... (my Athlon 1.33 sys)

still seems to work good, which is weird for a DM60+ 😛
