I was talking with a friend the other day and, in referring to something that happened like 1500 years ago, he said it happened "thousands" of years ago. Struck me as odd. I've always thought that to use the plural form of a number like that, you basically have to have at least two full amounts. So "thousands of years" would mean "at least 2000 years." Similarly, "dozens of people" would mean "at least 24 people."

What do you think?

thousand = 1,000

couple of thousand = 2,000

thousands = undefined amount equal to or greater then 3,000

When I think of thousands, I think of well more than 2000 years, past 10,000, but not past 20,000. By then i start using "tens of thousands"
