Poll: How many of you have upgraded your CPU->

I do a mobo cpu and ram upgrade every 9-12 months

Board is next and on to a 2500 mobile and up.

Yes... it tends to be somewhat of a "leapfrog" affair where I get a new CPU, then a better mobo, then a better CPU... I'll spare you the whole history, which goes all the way back to my Cyrix PR166 but most of my boards have had at least one upgrade in their lifespans (two of them being an upgrade from single-processor to dual processors, for the BP6 and Tiger100).

I always buy mobo and cpu at the same time. If I'm going to "upgrade", I'll typically buy both and hook up my old HDDs.

While I have oft times been intense about hardware purchases, I still believe you meant intention in the poll question Now personally, I no longer look at computer hardware for myself in terms of longevity/"upgradeability" but in terms of what can it do for me right now. But in contradiction to that I will be keeping my A64 3000+ and upgrading to a nF3 250 skt754 in all likelyhood OK this definitely isn't a yes or no question

I upgraded the processor twice in my previous board (epox 8kta+) within about 2 years (duron 750 to 950 to athlon 1.3). Previously all upgrades were board & processor.
Last summer I upgraded my board (asus a7n8x dlx) keeping the athlon then 6 months later upgraded the processor to a barton 2500. It is unusual for me to upgrade the board first, but I wanted the spdif sound & a place to go for future upgrades (cost of a soundcard was a good chunk of the motherboard)
I upgrade processor more based on the price point coming down. I only change boards when the price of the processor requiring a new chipset becomes what I think is reasonable cost (as motherboards don't change in price as quickly processors).
OR if Work has a purchase program, then I replace all hardware (last time was 3 years ago, so were due, hopefully after the new A64 socket boards are out a couple months)

I had a Pentium 3 1 GHZ with some chaintech mobo.

Ended up upgrading... the whole daggone rig.

I've done both. I've bought a CPU & mobo and did not upgrade the CPU on my old i850/P4 2.0a setup because chipsets and FSBs changed too fast. I did upgrade the CPU on a 440bx/PII450 system to a PIII1.0.

I had planned on upgrading the 3.2c in my i875 mobo, but it looks like chipsets will change too soon again.

Most of the time I do both the motherboard and the CPU but sometimes I just upgrade the CPU by itself.

Yep, I've upgraded my CPU twice on the same motherboard. Twice on my wife's system. This is consistently the way I do things, too.

I plan to Upgrade my P4-2.80C@3.3(+)ghz to the LAST of the Northwood Steppings (3.4/3.6ghz) in the hopes of hitting over 4Ghz next year in my SAME Abit Ic7 MB (should be a cheap ~$100 upgrade to breathe new life into the "old" platform).

Usually I upgrade a whole system at the same time but I have done it in the past.
Upgraded my old k62/350 to a k62/500 @ 600.. woot! hehe

I didn't get any kind of combo, but I got an Athlon 900 thunderbird(?) Slot A for xmas from my mom one year to upgrade from the 550 Athlon I had in the machine originally. Maybe I should put that computer back together...

Went from a Celeron 400Mhz@500 with the Soyo SY6BA+ III mobo, to a P4 2.4bGhz with an AOpen AX45-4D Max mobo.

Next upgrade wont be till December. Either a Socket-t CPU or a Socket 939 CPU. Which ever one has the better value by then. And what ever mobo I get it will have all the new cool things coming out.

jumped from P4 1.5 to a 2.4 with the same motherboard. forked over a bit extra when i purchased one of the 1st P4 MBs with 533FSB support. 1.5 being only a 400mhz model, it was rather handy when it came to upgrading around june last year.

right now i probably won't do the same as i find buying MBs for the future rather limiting. from now on, a high performance MB will go with a new CPU.

I used to have an Abit KT7a (KT133), had an Athlon 1.13, I then purchased a 1600+, used that, then bought an Epox 8k5a2 (KT333).. I used the 1600+ in the KT333 for a while, then went up to a 2100+ TBred core, used that for a while. I sold that, and went with a 2500+ and a Nforce2 board. I am also debating if I should bother with a mobile barton and try and OC that (but that is unlikely). Next upgrade will be either a P4 with Hyperthreading (always wanted to mess with a P4), or an 64bit AMD (not sure ATM).

KT7 + Duron 700 @ 933MHz
KT7 + Athlon 1GHz @ 1.43GHz
K7S5A + Athlon 1GHz @ 1.47GHz (same CPU, bigger overclock)
K7S5A + Athlon XP 1800+ @ 1.63GHz
8RDA+ + Athlon XP 1700+ @ 2GHz

So I've done all New CPU/MB, new CPU only, new MB only

I upgrade the CPU about once a year... only upgrade the mobo when there's a CPU that I want and my mobo won't support it (ie: AMD 64)
