Poll: How many of you have upgraded your CPU->

Have you ever upgraded your CPU but kept your motherboard? Did you ever plan your purchase of a new CPU motherboard combo based on the premise you could upgrade it in the future (and did you actually do that)?

Interested to see results.

Upgraded from an AMD XP 2000+ to a XP 2500+ (Barton) with the same mobo. Of course, the 2500+ OC's like a dream to 3200+.

I purchased my an35n as a replacement for a failed k7s5a, I figured that I'd upgrade to a barton at some point and eventually did just that, 2500+ running very nicely at 3200+ speed.

On my other computer I bought a used kt333 board to support my palamino 1900+ so I could upgrade both of my systems at the same time.

I've upgraded CPU in the same mobo... once. Same CPU I'm using now. Different mobo though - I upgraded that by itself another time 🙂

Usually I assume I'll have to buy a new mobo with the new CPU. Usually I'm right, and that cpu was an impulse buy. Anyway most of the time you have to (or at least really should) get new RAM for the new cpu anyway, might aswell upgrade the whole platform. Next time the mobo will probably be PCI-E so I'll be needing a new vid card aswell... bah, excluding drives I doubt I'll be able to carry much of this rig over into the next one 🙁

edit: is it me or does the poll Q not really have much to do with the thread Q? 😕

I agree. I normally upgrade when a new chipset comes out, so you HAVE to upgrade the cpu with it. Umm, right? 🙂 🙂

I had an XP 2600+ (Tbred) and Asus A7N8X Deluxe, upgraded to a 2500+, then an NF7-S so it was basically a full swap extended over time.

To be honest, when I bought my NF7-S and 1700+ last year, I had no intention of upgrading the CPU until it was time to scrap the whole thing. Like HeroOfPellinor said, it's not usually worthwhile to upgrade just the CPU. In my case, I nuked a motherboard and a chip, so I needed replacements. I ended up buying a 2500+ for my NF7-S and put my 1700+ on a cheap Biostar board (which has been absolutely bulletproof).

Few years back I purchased a Duron 700Mhz and an Abit KT7A (KT133A chipset) because I was on a major budget, and needed to buy a mobo that would let me upgrade down the road.

Ended up putting in an Athlon 1800+ CPU, going from 256mb to 768mb, and swapping out my GF2MX card to a GF4 4200, all on that Abit mobo. It's now become my wife's computer, but isn't too shabby even now.

Went from a 2100+ to the 2400+ mobile at 3200+ speed. This was the first time I've upgraded without switching the motherboard. Currently have an a7n8x deluxe.

I usually upgrade both at the same time, usually when the price falls on the newest generation of hardware. And then mainly because of socket and chipset incompatibilities.

Got an IC7-MAX3 today, so now I just need a deal on a P4 chip 🙂

EDIT: In the past I've upgraded chips on the same motherboard, and upgraded motherboards on the same chip, so a little of both..

I recently upgraded the CPU, but wasn't going to upgrade the mobo. I ended up having to because my NF7-S rev. 1.1 wouldn't handle anything else but 266FSB and I wanted to upgrade to a higher FSB.

I ended up using the old board in another system and upgrading to the NF7-S rev. 2 (is that really an upgrade?). I almost went to the AN7, but couldn't justify the extra $20.00.
