You forgot the plain 'ol option of No. I use Mozy Home, the free one. I'm thinking about doing the unlimited though for $55/yr. I like how I can choose the directories and schedule the backups. I have them scheduled for like 2pm. My wife is home at that time, mostly just dinking around on the internet. By the time I get home at 4, the backup is done.

whatever happened to plain 'ol hard drives?

I never liked the idea of backing up my data with a company that could very easily screw me over by going out of business or in a number of other ways.
Not to mention the hassle of uploading stuff on slow ass internet. I prefer to just do multiple backups on various hard drivers. Cheaper, faster, and less chance of getting screwed.

If they disappeared, it'd only matter if it happened at the same time as a hard drive failure; otherwise you just find a different backup provider. If you're worried about security, encrypt your files before they get backed up.

As long as your house doesn't burn down.

I backup to a hard drive once or twice a year and keep the drive in my fireproof safe in my closet along with my passport and birth certificate.
I don't really have a whole lot of data on my PC that I couldn't get over losing... the only really important thing to me is my documents folder, which contains basically everything I've ever written since high school, both academic, creative, and anything else. I back that up onto 2 dvd's as needed and keep one in the aforementioned safe and another at my parents' house inside one of the miscellaneous boxes in their basement of stuff that I never bothered to take with me when I moved out.

I might be interested in something like this, though I'm not sure how reputable they are. For something like data backup I'd prefer more assurances.

mozy is run by EMC. can't get more of an assurance than that.
