I thought I was, but my mother told me they stopped giving smallpox immunizations in either the 50s or 60s. I received the polio vaccine and something else.

I lived in the Philippines and have been vaccinated umpteen thousand times. If there is a biological attack on this country I will just donate my blood.

Nope.

IIRC, the last official case of smallpox was in Somalia in 1977. Only small samples are left in Russia and the CDC in Atlanta.

Why do they stop vaccinating just because they think its gone? Is it really hard/expensive to produce the vaccine?

They stop vaccinating because there is no need. Like someone said earlier the only available samples are in Russia and CDC. As with any vaccine there is a risk of side effects and even possibly smallpx infection. Why take the risk?

I think they stopped innoculating children for Smallpox in 1974. Anybody born afterwards is going to die. Too bad so sad.

Um, that is correct so unless you are 40 years or older you are not imunized.

Actually it's around 30 or so. My 30 year old aunt was one of the first NOT to be immunized.

The only way it could be re-introduced is if it escaped from a lab or was used as biological warfare.

And guess what?

IIRC there was some discussion going on a while back that Iraq had gotten ahold of some samples from a lab here in the US.

Not exactly very comforting.

At least you will be a young good looking corpse. Hmm wait a second, Smallpox symptoms are ulcers on the skin and leaves nasty scars. Forget the good looking corpse part.

Another Bio weapon is Anthrax wich is like the Plague and leaves an even nastier looking corpse.

Not too woried about anthrax, attempts to use it have been unsuccessful (@ least in aerosol form).

If they're willing to die to transmit smallpox, it'll work pretty effectively...

I was born before 74, I dont have no scar. I think they changed the shot method after a certain time.

My father is already looking into getting Smallpox immunizations for my
sister and myself, if they even happen to be available. :(

I was born in 1970 and I have the smallpox vaccination scar on my left shoulder. My wife was born in 1973 and she wasn't vaccinated for smallpox. None of my 3 children have been vaccinated against it either... I wonder if I can get them hooked up now?

Hmmm. I think I'd much rather *not* be a corpse. :p:confused:

And Red, if it's Anthrax we have to worry about, we're both doomed. ;):Q

So since the disease is almost eliminated then why continue to immunizations? That was their arguement anyhow.

There are rumors that Iraq, South Korea (?) and some other place may have small pox contained as well.
