Poll: How many miles do you go between oil changes?

The manual says 3500.
Mechanic says they are trying to make money off you by making you change oil more frequently.

I do about every 4000 - 5000 miles.

I change it every 5000 miles at my Ford dealership. I don't change it every 3500 miles because I do mostly highway driving.

3000 miles religiously, always Mobil 1 as well. There were only ~1200 of my turbos made, and a new one wouldn't be cheap, so I like to keep fresh clean oil in there. And the Mobil 1 does very well with engine wear too.

Only in the US do car makers or quikie lube places say you should change it every 3000 miles. Most other countries suggest 5000 or 6000 miles.

3000 is a marketing gimick, nothing more.

All of my cars have had their oil changed at between 5000 and 6000 miles. My old Mazda is still on the road with 160,000 miles.

4000 for dino oil
8000 for synthetic oil, with a filter change at 4000

3000 for synthetic oil if getting blown.

3000 coz jippy lube said so....jk.. Just wanna keep my engine silent with synthetic oil every 3k.....it goes smooth.......

Maybe your poll should say between 3-4K, between 4-5k, etc.. Maybe I am just nit picking 😀

The manual on my Honda says every 7500, and I remember when the oil places used to say 5k. I know it is a marketing gimmick, but I cannot let my car go past 4500 without getting an oil change.

<< I think about it at 3,000. Act on it around 4,000. >>

My manual says 3750 for severe driving, 7500 for normal driving.

3000 is just a ploy by the quickie oil outlets. They get away with it because oil changes are relatively cheap and changing your oil a little too early doesn't hurt your car.

Only 160,000 miles? That's nothing. 🙂 203,600 miles and climbing for my Accord. The only replacements have been the alternator and water pump at 193,000 miles (both were original), and the A/C condensor (also original) at 197,000 miles. I change the oil religiously at 3,000 miles, and despite the fact that everything inside my engine is nearly 14 years old with 203,600 miles of wear on it, the car still gets 30 mpg and does not burn a drop of oil. Marketing gimmick or not, I'm not about to increase my oil change interval.

Fine, it's your money... feel free to waste it every 3000 miles.

BTW, it's a 97 Mazda 626 I bought in early 98. Having my stores located in many different towns kinda sucks for a car 😉 I figured I'd run it into the ground instead of my new Passat. My girlfriend has it now, and it still runs great.

205 thou on my 87 Toyota Corolla.

I change every 2500 miles, I want to make sure my little car makes it to 400 thou 🙂

Yeah. I'm quite surprised - 3000 miles seems like a total waste with modern lubricants.

A typical small car like the current VW Polo would have a manufacturer suggested oil & filter change every 12.500 miles, and these little (1.4l or smaller) engines don't have an easy life with the short distance travel they are subjected to.

I should have pointed out that I almost always change it myself, so all I buy is the oil and the Fram filter. I figure that $10 every 3 months isn't a big deal.

Heh, that explains it. Intervalls are 3 times longer here - but oil is also 3 times more expensive 😉.

🙂My Accord has 196,000 miles. I got it when it had 124,000.
I have been changing the oil every 3,000 - no problems with that. I can afford $12/3000 miles.
