I pay my own electric bill, but still keep all my computers on 24/7 . . . would it really make a difference?
I didn;t know people still turned their computers off. weird.
Well, think about it: even if your PC was totally idle and you turned off all your other peripherals (monitor, printers, modems, speakers, scanners, etc.) it's still going to draw about 100 watts. And if you don't turn off your peripherals and/or you don't have all the power saving features set to max, you might be drawing 200-300 watts even when you aren't using your PC. In my area, a killowatt-hour costs about 13 cents. So an appliance drawing 100 watts of power will use a penny of electricity every 46 minutes. Sounds insignificant - and it really is - but what if you have 3-4 PCs running all the time? It does add up and it seems senseless just to spend the money for idling.

Of course, many people run their PCs 24/7 for the novelty effect. Makes it seem like their machines are in a mission-critical production environment. Geeky stuff. I mean, how many people REALLY need a couple of servers running 24/7 in their house if they don't have their own business?

So either you:

1. didn't turn it on at the LAN party
2. you didn't take it with you afterwards
3. you took such long extension leads with you so you could take it home afterwards without turning it off
4. last LAN party was at your place, and you just returned from another LAN party
5. you lied to us!

Which is it gonna be? :p

24/7 logged into a Direct Connect hub as pr0n server. Also use it for personal pic hosting and ftp.

24/7 here With the monitor set to sleep after 10 minutes.

Reasons:

1. My main box is the print and file server for my wireless network.

2. Leaving it on 24/7 and good cooling is what I attribute to never having had a HDD failure (even with IBM 60 and 75 GXPs). You can't tell me that spinning up and down HDDs plus the thermal changes aren't going to damage HDDs over time.

3. Leaving my box on 24/7 costs me about $5-10 extra a month in electricity. The benefits above, and of being able to jump on the computer without having to wait for it to boot is worth that to me.

KB and Mouse are dirt cheap. You can get a nice mouse and cheap keyboard for about $25. Look on Hot Deals and you can find a nice monitor for around $100. Might be worth it...
