I leave it on when i'm using it, and turn it off when i'm done. No reason to leave it on - just wastes electricity.

All day.

It's crunching SETI and (most of the time) downloading or uploading from/to ftps.

It's on 24/7 but when I'm not using it I put it into hibernate since the fan is so loud.

2/4 computers at my house are servers so they are on 24/7/365 and the other two (workstations) are on for less than 5 each day since I use my primary server for all of my workstation work because it's such a beast.

It is on 24/7 here at my house. Uptime for 42+ days too. Since I got home from college.

When you start paying your own electrical bill, you might not want to keep all your machines running 24/7.

Right now, mine is on from when I get up to when I go to bed (usually comes out to be about 14-16 hours). I'm home from school right now and my room is poorly ventilated or something, and the computer makes it like a sauna in here. At school, though, it's on 24/7.

24/7 it doesn't cost that much more to just leave it on than it does to shut it down and then wait for it to reboot. Just like your fridge studies show it costs less to leave the door open to grab a few things than to shut it and open it over again quickly same w/ the freezer.

Only for a few hours. (< 5 hrs.)

XP boots so fast now that it doesn't really matter if I turn it off, because in under 30 seconds my computer has booted to the logon screen.

24x7 - hibernation when not in use. There's something like 8 fans running, sounds like a jet engine.

I pay my own electric bill, but still keep all my computers on 24/7 . . . would it really make a difference?
I didn;t know people still turned their computers off. weird.
