Also, files stored on 50-60 CDR/CDRWs (at least 30 gigs of files backed up and not currently used; not counting mp3s).

Raid is basically a way to either speed up the speed of 2 (preferably) identical HD's, mirror their data, or both at the same time.
Basically most people go for the speed version of raid.
Say a 100mb file needs to be copied....first half goes to HD1 and the other goes to HD2.
about 90% quicker than 1 HD
