Well I generally use 4 or 5 fingers. Usually my thumb and the finger next to the pinky are used to guide the mouse, and then the other 2 fingers inbetween are used for right and left clicking. Generally the pinky just glides along the table, but I sometimes use it to move the mouse also. The pinky may not actually be needed, and technically I could use only one finger for right and left clicking. Then there are times when I might actually try to use the wheel on the mouse.

Thumb on left side button index for left button and scrolling middle finger for right button and the fourth finger (don't know its name) for right side button. At home I use a Logitech with forward and reverse both on the left side so i can use my thumb for both.

Exactly the same set up as him.
MS Intelli Mouse at work, and Logitech mx518 at home.

No, the opposite is true.
It's comfortable to relax my hand and keep the fingers close together on the top of the mouse. Then index and ring finger just have to go straight down to press the button. Also, I can switch from scroll to left and/or right click in less then 0.1 seconds.

Perhaps for some the way the mouse is operated is based upon how they game ...
Perhaps for some it's due to the shape/size/type of mouse being used ...
Perhaps for some it's due to lack of coordination with their ring finger ...

There are many factors, and most people will use whatever they like best. I go for the comfort and quick control option, that's why i like 3 fingers.

prior mouse was intellipoint, same as above plus i think pinky finger on the other (right) side button. might have been ring finger, i'd have to dig out the mouse and play to find out.

Nothing beats a 5 button mouse for gaming!! I've got reload set to the thumb button and whatever key I also commly use bound to the ring finger button.

I use the Evoluent Vertical Mouse, so I can use my first three fingers and my thumb. The right-most (or bottom-most) button I have bound to (CTRL+C) so I can do quick copy/pasting, and the thumb button I have bound to "Back," even though I primarily use MouseGestures lately.

For those that asked earlier about 3-finger users, I don't really have to "pick-up" the mouse I use. Instead, I just tilt it to one side, and that lifts the optical sensor up far enough that I won't track as I reposition it.

It's a great mouse, IMHO. Its resolution is 1200dpi, so it does gaming really well, and it's comfortable.

I've seen that contraption before, looked unusable to me :p. How do you keep that thing from tipping over when you're rapidly clicking? And it seems like it'd be hard to be accurate with it. Then again, I've never held one, so I could be wrong.

I meant more how many fingers do you use to control the buttons :). I'd think most everyone needs their pinky and thumb at the very least to hold it and move it around.
