I've been driving since 1970 and have been in five accidents.....one of which was my fault.
1. 1971, car pulls out in front of me...says he didn't see me. It was at dusk and I only had my parking lights on. I wasn't charged.
2. 1976, I ran a stop sign in my Fiat X1/9. Had the top off and a bit of cigarette ash flew up into my eye. I cleared my eye out just as I was even with the stop sign...got hit in the driver's side and did about $2K in damage (in 1976 dollars). Initially I was charged, but the other driver, unknown to me at the time, had been drinking and was subsequently charged with DUI.
3. 1986, I hit a German Shepherd on Christmas Eve around midnight while I was riding a little Honda CB200. I had on a full Bell helmet (the kind that had a very small view port on it....much smaller opening than full helmets of this day have, so vision wasn't the best. The dog pops out from behind a spruce bush and darts into my path. I saw the dog a split second before I hit him, throwing me over the handlebar and onto the road. Bent the front forks, got a good case of road rash on my right leg. Thankfully, I was wearing a helmet because the next day we discovered a crack in the helmet where I had hit the curb with my head.
This was in a residential neighborhood and what brought the neighbors out to see what the matter was was the dog screaming. When the bike was pulled off the dog, he ran away without any signs of injury which he must have had. The next morning, while examining the bike and finding the forks bent, we noticed fur burned onto the right header pipe as it exited the motor's head. Apparently, the bike landed on the dog with the exhaust on somewhere like his neck. The exhaust pipe was burning the dog which is why he was screaming.
4. 1990, Pony Express van ran a stop sign in front of me. I tried to swerve to the right to avoid (whe was coming from right to left) while standing on the brakes, but I pretty much broadsided her. Over $3500 in damage to a 4 month old Grand Am....was a nice car, though. While its Quad 4 HO engine was not the smoothest thing around, it did have some power.
5. 1992, I was stopped at a traffic light in a GMC Jimmy. Idiot never tried to stop and just plowed into my rear end. Did about $2500 damage to the Jimmy, but his beater Chevy Luv had both fenders peeled back almost to the doors along with the hood. Guess that Class 3 hitch on the back fo the Jimmy was worth the investment because it took the brunt of the impact.
