Just to list the new things coming out:

CPU wise:

AMD 4X4 (dual dual core cpus + possibly putting a GPU for a video card on a processor slot)
AMD K8L (DDR3 ram support + quad core support)

Intel's Quad Core
Intel's updated/better motherboards for the Core 2 Duo setup (including nforce 5xx)

Video card wise:

ATI's X1950 line
ATI's DX10 flagship cards
*Possibly* ATI Quad Crossfire DX10

Nvidia's DX10 flagship cards
*Possibly* Nvidia's Quad SLI DX10

I hope they never do.

Boring markets bore me :p

However, the CPU market isn't really gonna change all that much anytime soon for us IMO, as 4x4 & quad core are a bit beyond the normal users needs.

I imagine adoption will be higher here than average of course, but it won't be anywhere close to the adoption rate of dual core IMO.

Technology is now developing at an ever increasing rate. Competition is fierce. That tells me the only way "calm" can be achieved is through a serious economic recession. And that, as history shows is only temporary.

In the 80s, a complete technology turnover occurred about every 3-4 years. Now it is almost every year. Calm? I hope not.

Calm down? I hope not. Now if it would slow down for a short time to let me catch my breath that would be nice.

Unfortunately for me, never.

I've had the same 2.8E prescott, 875P mb, 1gb ddr400, fx5900xt since 2004. Every time I think about upgrading, something new comes along. I'd have upgraded my AGP, only I don't know what to upgrade to. It's like I'll have a better option after two months. And it's been like that for over 2 years. Ah, well. The conroe's looking good. Then again, 4x4s might do them in....

Why would it? Like corkyg says either through a serious economic recession or one maker dominates the market with very little competition but generally there is only a matter of time before another company breaks through because the dominating company slows down.

I just want it to stabilize.

AMD was leading for about 2 years, but people still went for Intels

I think right now it's the reverse.

AMD 4X4 will reverse it, but only for the serious enthusiast crowd anyway..

Kentfield will come in at the same time or before, so maybe noone will care..

Unless they bring out K8L + 4X4 simultaneously, thus letting ya put 8 cores on a system + all the benefits of 4x4

The end of the world.

I don't know, I've been following proc market since around 1998 and vidcards since 2001. And I'd say, recently, there's nothing particularly un-calm. Unless you count the AMD-ATI merger, which is novel. But waiting for the market to "stabilize" is like waiting for your heart to stop. You want one company to consistently put out a "better" product?

I'd say that, while as a whole this is just a little burst of speed, what's driving it is a lot to do with Vista's release and that it will "slow down" soon after.

Ah, that Vista. I haven't been able to buy an LCD yet. And now that I find one I like (in my range) it turns out to be non HDCP. Previously, there was ghosting. Then banding. The backlighting. Now HDCP. It'll always be something or the other. And that's just for an LCD. Maybe the market will stabilize after Vista. But I bet only for a few months. DX-11 will be on the way soon. Along with a new "Gen" of graphics cards.

hopefully never. competition is what causes inovation. if the market stabilized, technology would stop evolving. what would happen if intel didn't make a faster chip? although from one point, then yeah you never know when to buy.

there's a saying that goes like this: the second you take your computer out of the box, it's obsolete.

the computer you baught yesterday, will be cheaper tomorrow. so we never buy? sometimes, you just need to jump on.

get stuff that will last, then save for a new system.

well I know how fast stuff goes.. but it's been quiet the last few years

its been very simple:

get an athlon xp or pentium 4.. they're about equal, but amd is better for gaming
get an athlon 64 / X2 or pentium D... X2 is better
now it's get a conroe or X2 AM2... conroe destroys AM2

in a year?

The reaction to this thread exemplifies the myth of future proofing. If you're always waiting for the next "must-have" tech to come along before upgrading... you'll never upgrade.

It would take a globally catastrophic event to stop these markets within the next two years. Overall I don't see them cooling as much as consolidating. AMD picks up ATI. How long until Intel picks up nVidia? Consolidation will not only happen on the business side, but in the components themselves. Eventually everything will become a commodity so buying a computer will be like buying a cell phone. That won't stop enthusiasts from modding, but it will be different.
