Poll: How important is having a completely silent PC to you? How much MHz would you give up??

fan noise isn't the issue with my system. it's the freakin' hard drives! that damn quantum is loud, and then so is the damn psu, after replacing the fan too. if it weren't for those, i'd have a near quiet system. the 10k scsi drive i just ordered isnt going to help either...which is why i'm going to make a new case, quietness at last...

I just paid over 200 bones for a 1 gig P3 to replace a 700 P3 that did 1 gig with ease with a Alpha and a 38 Black Delta. I rather have a quiet productive pc than having to listen to that dang Black Delta noise that reminds me when I use to live near the flight path of the airport.

I wouldn't give up any speed for silence. Might change my tune if I had to sleep with my computer in the same room though. The noise doesn't bother me or my wife, except for the fact that she can't hear her computer at all since mine drown's it out.

Delta and a Tbird sitting in a tree, C-O-O-L-I-N-G..

At the office I could care less, but my PC at home lives in the bedroom and I would certainly sacrafice MHz for silence, which might allow me to sleep with the bloody thing whirring way. Even the most demanding 3D games are video-card limitted around 800 MHz, so it's not like the extra speed is going to be missed unless you're doing 3D rendering or video encoding.

A great motherboard feature for the new Athlon4-based chips with the thermal diode would be an automatic HSF current governor -- it would simply reduce the juice to the HSF as much as possible until the temperature reached a given safety limit. Childishly easy to implement as a BIOS setting, and a major selling feature, even for OEM systems.

When you're playing some games, like RPGs and other games that have some great sound efects, or listening to mp3s, it's definitelly better to get a non-overclocked CPU with silent cooler. Otherwise, noise is not a problem for me...

I would sacrifice a little. I did with my own system. I removed my Delta and because of that I had to clock down one notch on my OC'd P3 700 FCPGA. Now when you are talking about a few mhz, I think its worth it to lose a few for increased quiet. Even without the Delta I have 6 fans in my case and the CPU fan I have now is not exactly silent. You get used to the extra noise after awhile anyway. I draw the line at Delta Fans though. That was just too crazy

<< Why? Still 12MHz left thanx to overclocking...good old 286 times... >>

hehe, at that time i was into Apples (bow my head in shame)

No sacrafice of clock speed for a quiet system. Frankly, I like things loud (or actually, if something is loud and it serves a purpose (cooling), I don't mind at all).

So bring on the noise.

Depends on what I'm doing with the machine. When I play games I couldn't care less about noise, but when I work, I loose my concentration if it is too noisy. I'd much rather have a 1.2 ghz@1.3 with silent cooling than 1.2@1.4 with deltas.

Though I dont like particularly noisy computers, but a computer without some noise is like a car engine that doesnt make any sounds, lifeless, and no thrill.

None, no not 1MHz. And this comes from a man running a Duron 600@1000MHz.(10 fans in an Addtronics case including a 38 Black Delta).

I could make it quiter but I can't give up the 1G.(stable)

Hey, nobody has said anything about the 'wind' one of these things suck. I have to wear socks sitting next to this thing. I just have to be happy with the warm, coxy feeling it gives me inside.

Sickining, ain't it. What humans can enjoy.(ha)

I'm with Pabster..I would rather have the best cooling available, loud or not, than a quiet hot running system. I am currently running over 500CFM through my case now, and it does not bother me a bit. I work 3rd shift, so I sleep during the day and I learned to sleep through just about anything long ago. The rig is in my room BTW, and the fans can easily be drowned out with my 8.2 Promedia's...

Loudest things in my rig:

Delta "hairdryer" 60mm Fan
Two 130CFM 120mm YS Techs
Two Pioneer Slot Loaders..(105S and 106S)

Heheh. I have just ordered a car with an engine that doesn't make any sounds. In stop and go traffic at low speeds, the gas engine shuts off completely, leaving it to run purely on electric. Dead quiet, and totally awesome. I just wish it were quieter at high speed, but it isn't, and yes, I did trade HP for this car.

I couldn't handle that...my modified Mustang vibrates the dishes in the kitchen sink when it's just idling outside...🙂

Cool, are you serious about this?

I haven't traded MHz, but I did step down 1800RPM.

My Western Digital WD400 wailed like a banshee, so I just replaced it with a new Fujitsu 5400RPM drive. I can actually hear my HSF again! I probably lost some speed in the transaction, but not much, and even so it was well worth it.

I know I could push my system faster if I put more cooling in, but I'm happy with what I have, so I guess I've theoretically given up about 200-300 MHz.

I had the huge Delta Fan, on the FOP38, just couldn't handle all the noise. Got a Taisol and its great. 5 case fans, Taisol, Enermax Whisper Power Supply, and it is VERY QUIET considering. It is about 4 ft. from my head when I sleep, and I can fall asleep no problems.

But then again, I can have the TV on, computer on, air conditioner on, fan on, and lights on, and still fall asleep. LOL 😀

I am looking to build two new systems for myself in the next six months. A SUPER high end system, possibly dual palomino's or a 1.7GHz Palomino (however high they are at the time of building), and a almost completely silent under $800 machine.

Will be fun 😀
