Poll: How hot does your hard drive run idle?

Desktop - Samsung Spinpoint 160g PATA @ 27C with an 80mm fan in front of it.
HTPC - Seagate 300g @ 30C with one 12cm fan in the back.

Thermaltake case 120mm intake/drive, exhaust fans, dual cores @ 100%, several other drives in case not recognized by SpeedFan due to RAID.

Maxtor DM 10 - 34C (35C under benchmarking load)
Ambient temp at intake - 26.6C (AC off)

--------------

Antec SLK3000B case, 120mm intake/drive and exhaust fans (on low), several other drives in case not recognized...

Maxtor DM 10 300 GB 36C
Ambient temp at intake 26.6C

the one in my sig is always around 56 C which makes me nervous, but someone told me that the sensors might just be off. anyone know how to check that?

You can measure the temp at the top of the drive using a thermometer, or just feel it -- 30's would feel cool, 40's warm, ...

If you can put your fingers on the top of the drive for more than 10 seconds or so then it probably isn't at 56C.

I must be doing something wrong, my temps are way high...maybe it's because the HDDs don't have metal to metal contact like in other cases.

I have 2 sensors that read 126C, which freaked me out when I first used speedfan. I had just come off a SCSI architecture so I was very cautious about parts placement and monitoring when I built my rig and whenever I add something that might obstruct air flow. My drives generally run a little higher than my case, but I moved the sensor to right next to my GPU so now my case reads 35C vs my HDD 30C. It doesn't read my S-ATA RAID array.

WD4000KD - 26C

Measured with speedfan

I also have 2 samsung p120's, but they dont show up in speedfan because of nvraid.

HD says 37C at idle
Temp1 (whatever the ****** that is measuring?) says a toasty 72C at idle

But im on a laptop so lol

Seagate 7200.8...30 to 31C with 25C ambient inside Antec SLK3000B with front 120 x 38 mm Panaflo set at 900 rpm. HDD temp matches ambient air temp during AM cold start.

i have a simple WD 80GB 7.2k HDD in the lower cage that idles at 46. the drive can get to 55+ without damage accoring to specs but it's no healthy. i don't have a fan on it tho.

Maxtor 160gb 8mb cache 27C
Seagate Barracuda IV 40gb 29C
(not being worked, though they arent allowed to spin down either)

chenming chassis type case with the HDD's in a drive cage being coolled by an 80mm L1A which is probably at 5 or 7v (Antec fan cable).

Room temperature: 29C

HDD1 38C - 160GB Maxtor
HDD2 36C - 300GB Maxtor
HDD3 30C - 300GB Maxtor
HDD4 31C - 250GB Samsung

My hd temps are 30-39C.

Also an interesting SMART counter is the max temperature. I had a seagate which reported 63C (!) max - pc froze during shutdown and left idle overnight. My samsung hd's will never reach that temperature even under load without any sort of cooling.

Antec P180 with 120mm intake fan.

Upper Cage:
WD Raptor 74GB- 30C
Hitachi Deskstar 80GB- 29C

Lower Cage:
Hitachi Deskstar 250GB- 29C

WD250KS (SATA 16mb) running at a toasty 49c, with a Thermaltake Swing case and a 120mm Tt fan blowing over the side of the cage. I'm a bit worried about it, but don't have any other cooling options that seem better. Cripes, its a 120mm fan and it isn't doing a good job, or else that drive runs HAWT !!

Maxtor 6Y120P0 (122.9GB)
Idle temp 23C

Is my HD reporting a bad temp? 😵 Seems to be an oddly low temp...I have a VANTEC HDC502A hard disk cooler btw.
