board end connector --------------------------------> slave connector (DVD) ----------> master connector (burner).

I never knew that. Do you use cable select on the jumpers, and are all dual connector IDE cables capable of using cable select?

I've always just used the jumpers to set master and slave. I thought you needed a special cable to use CS.

<< My burner is on top, DVD below it. Reason? Simple... i run my burner as the secondary master and DVD as secondary slave, and on a standard IDE cable, the master connector is at the end of the cable, and the slave connector in the middle. Therefore, it makes sense that the burner be on top, that way the IDE cable runs normally, without having to double back on itself....

glenn1 is right. It only makes sense to run it this way ^

Unless you have them on seperate cables, in which case it makes no difference.

I have a 16x DVD drive on top, and a 12x10x32x8 CDRW/DVD combo on bottom. No CD-ROM.....but, close ;)

He's not talking about cable select, he's just talking about having the red stripe on the cable line up without having to fold the cable over.
