I have a 300-disc CD changer and about as many CDs. Previously, I had them grouped according to Genre. I.E. Classic Rock, Classic Metal, Thrash, Punk, Techno, Classical, etc.

I moved, so I had to take all the CDs out of the changer. Now I'm ready to put them back in. I'm thinking of doing things differently this time. Possibly putting them in alphabetically by artist, then album title.

My changer supports "Genre programming/random play" I.E. you tell it Rock CDs are in slots 1-15, 19-27 and it will play only those slots.

I guess I have some options here. Please vote. If the way you do it ins't listed, please reply in the thread. Thanks for your time. :)

Usually they're arranged by artist... but sometimes by album if I have all the songs.

Where's the option for "I encoded all my legally purchased CD's to high quality mp3 and have an HTPC hooked up to my home stereo so I don't need to use a bulky archaic CD changer anymore"?

Done. :D

BTW, I've done the same, and play MP3s in my truck and on my PC. But I can't see putting together a HTPC just to play MP3s. I own all my DVDs legally...no ripped copy could ever compare to a real DVD, IMO.

Why not? You've already got all the music ripped onto the PC - it would take all the Raw Horsepower of, say, a Celeron 500, to be able to stream them skip-free over the network - hell, wirelessly - to your living room and out to the speaker system.

Yes, but then I'd have to hit "Play" on my PC, run into the living room, switch the input, etc. Kinda defeatist, no?

I understand the logic of a HTPC for a dorm room or for someone with no equipment. I have a really nice HT...my TV could be better, but I'm working on there. :) I do, however, have the audio side covered like a blanket.

Besides, once you go the HTPC route, you need to somehow get the video out onto your TV screen so you can see what you're doing...then you need a wireless KB and mouse...then you need to have those things on the table in fron of you. See what I'm getting at?

i put them in an order which i thought would make sense to listen to from start to finish. each artist is grouped together with their own CD's, but it goes from artist to artist. so i have lots of harder rock at the beginning, then indie stuff in the middle, then 90's alternative towards the end. the very end has the oddballs like ravi shankar or andrew wk.

That's an interesting idea! Thanks. :)

Listening to my FLAC jukebox right now, this afternoon it's Kate Bush ("Love and Anger" & "Rocket's Tail" with David Gilmour are classics)

I couldnt live without my HTPC. I dont have a single mp3 on it, rather me and my roomates stream music onto it from our PCs. Its as good a DVD player as you can get, if not better than a standalone, as long as youve got good TV-out. Not to mention its awesome for emulators.
