403Forbbiden, your career choice is your own and I can't help you there, but I can give you some advice about getting a gun. Before you buy a gun I suggest going to at least one IPSC(International Practical Shooters Confederation) meet and poke around, ask around to see which gun/caliber people are using for different situations. IPSC holds events where you can practice/compete in simulated combat shooting. Things like shooting multiple targets, moving targets, reloading while engageing targets and others are practiced. You'll notice that a vast number of the people at these meets are law enforcement special units guys and regular law enforcement. You might as well learn from the people that has combat shooting as part of their daily lives. If you're going to have a gun, for fear of being in a combat situation with another guy with a gun you might as well give yourself an edge and prepare ahead of time.
I strongly suggest that you don't take the middle ground. Meaning don't just buy a gun then don't know how to use it for your intended purpose. If you are not going to learn combat shooting through the IPSC or some training organization I suggest not getting a gun at all. You will have better chances for survival if you don't have a gun and just plead for your life or run like hell. Having a gun in your hands makes it that much easier for your opponent to justify to himself shooting at you. There are also various legal issues with carrying a loaded gun hidden on your person. But a gun at home is useless if you need it now. I imagine it would be much easier to remove your threat simply by calling the cops and have them deal with that irrate guy. Whatever course of action you decide to take you can't go wrong with educating yourself first. Good luck and don't forget to duck.
