I have taken Macro and am taking Micro now.

In response to Entity's claim, you could use that argument for 90% of the posts in OT. This is just a pub, not an academic think tank. If someone wants to voice their opinion that is fine, it's not like anything we say here is going to have any impact on the world anyway.

Nope.

Then again, I think the argument that taking Econ 101 qualifies one to discuss matters of a global economy is fallacious.

Rob

That's like saying a redox reaction is different in somalia than the US. If it is scientific (which they like to claim) the same holds true anywhere and anytime.
No it isn't. Taking Econ 101 hardly gives someone perspective on even the most rudimentary principles; I'm not saying that someone who is well versed in economic principles can't understand issues on a global level, but simply that Econ 101 hardly provides that understanding.

FWIW, I also don't generally talk about economic matters (in the aforementioned threads), because I'm out of my field.

Rob

My point there is nothing scientific about it nor are there any basic truths other than it's more desirable to have more credits than debits. Anything else is just speculation thus we have like 100 schools of econmic thought.
Here are just some i can think of MONETARISTS, KEYNESIANS, CLASSICAL, AUSTRAIN.

So you are welcome to join the discussion and be called an idiot like me🙂

Ack. I'm not saying that. Here's what I'm saying:

Dudd seems to be saying that having taken Econ 101 gives you a more valid point on fiscal matters. I'm just disagreeing with that, saying that Econ 101 students - from my experience - don't really understand that much more than others in these matters. In any demographic, you'll find morons; you will find insipid idiots who post that Bush ruined the economy, even after having taken Econ 101. I'm simply trying to say that having taken Econ 101 doesn't make one's claims in such threads more valid; the validity can be judged based on the post itself.

I try to stay out of fields where I feel like I'm not well-versed in the particular subject matter. Maybe when I graduate (and have more time to read up), I'll learn some stuff about Econ, and then feel less afraid about being insipid myself. 🙂

Very true, I hope that no one thinks they are the next Greenspan, but it should at least give them some understanding that the economy isn't based entirely on the whims of one man.

i'm probably more in line w/krugman in that my opinion of greenspan is not very high, but that's another debate for another time. 🙂

I'm also a Chartered Accountant and the Corporate Controller for a US public company.

I wouldn't mind being another Milton Friedman, but that's just my opinion. I like Krugman as well, even though I've only read a little bit of his stuff.

my first BA was in econ (specialized in mathematical econ & econometrics, was accepted into econ PhD. program).

so, when i say:
"Bush has ruined Clinton's economy, it's all Bush's fault!"
it means
"Bush has ruined Clinton's economy, it's all Bush's fault!"

yes econ 101,102 and probeably will have to make more of econ when i transfer will see.Im business finance major.

Micro
Macro

Once in a while I'll do some free reading on specific topics and issues about econ. Havne't done that in a while though...just too busy 🙁

Only 60 some odd have voted.

Maybe those that haven't taken any econ courses are just not participating?

Considering its basically my major, yes, i have taken quite a few.

The poll says that 94.2% have taken basic economics... Either the people that haven't aren't voting, or many people didn't retain what they learned.

But I think it's most obvious in the "Why does X cost so much?" threads.

IMHO, taking any more than a small amount of economics courses is not only unhelpful, but positively detrimental to the average person's ability to think about and discuss economic subjects.

-it's like the golden rule. So basic. However people need ethics and philosophy classes just to confuse matters. That's ECON.

yea .. took a couple 200 level courses ... these were the only classes i got as in before i dropped out .... never went to class, never studied ... went to tests ... got as ...

i think it should have been "Have you taken and PASSED and learned something from an Economics 101 course?" 😉
